Fixing That Fuel Petcock Leak

Ok - here's a good one for all of you CRF guy's.
When [ not if ] your fuel petcock starts leaking. Fuels dry out and crack the rubber internal disc and they also wear out from the pressure from the valve face depressing the disc. You will find that the internal petcock parts are not listed for the valve. Repair requires that the entire new petcock valve is replaced as a unit. So I have a easy way to fix it for about a quarter of the cost of the OEM full replacement petcock valve. What is leaking is the inner fuel gasket [ round rubber disc with four holes ]. You can buy a Honda OEM part number 16955-HA2-005 gasket. This is actually listed for the Honda CR250 MX bikes. The CR disc is exactly a direct replacement for the CRF disc that is not available. Easy repair, drain the fuel, two cross point screws on the valve face. Plug and play and off you go.

I actually think many of the other bikes petcock valves use this same disc but not 100% sure on that. I do know it appears to be the same disc that is for the Kawasaki KX motocross bikes also.

Good one Neil, there is a lot of things that only come as an assemble now a days. Not good for tinkers like ourselves but probably good if you just want to make it work and have the cash to do it.
Don't suppose you know much about the screens in the petcocks.
Mine basic disolved/melted in the 230. Just wonder if it is the same as say the 250x or maybe old xr80? I can get a generic minibike one cheap but still want the reserve like the Honda tap.

No, I have never had to replace a screen on a petcock. Most the Honda including the carbed street bikes use that same filter. Maybe a bike scrap yard ? Maybe check bike CRF's Only OEM parts site for an older CBR900RR filler they may have been available if I recall correctly.

And if we keep buying parts for older bikes that just happen to fit our newer bikes the manufacturers tend to still keep them available. Suzuki bits are still available for old ts series from 1974. It might be only the bits that keep them running but it makes it easier for us that like our old farm and bush bikes.

Hey Ken, I did not take any photo's. I was so excited to see if my research had panned out I just threw the new disc in and filled that bad boy up with gas.

My thinking on the disc replacement also was "It is so easy a cave man can do it" so I just buttoned it back up and "Bob's your Uncle" done. I could take pic's of the old & new disc's and the petcock assy. with some description but I don't know it would really help other than someone seeing it in the how to section if they were looking for how to fix their leaking valve ?

Understand. Yeah, I'm sure it's an easy fix. Some don't dive in to something like this without some photo reassurance.

Were you just scouring the parts fiche till you found something ?? , or did you need one for a CR and found that it was the same after purchase ??
Not a disassembly procedure picture Ken , but i happened to have a disassembled petcock picture from when Neil and I were talking about this a while back , so at least now everyone can see what sequence the parts are in , which should help with re-assembly
NOTE: , this one is for the 450R *02* , but the X petcock is the same with the only difference being the valve detents and the holes actually used because of the Reserve position on the X , but the "gasket" itself is the exact same part for both models , so the X would use 3 of the 4 holes and the R only uses 2 of the 4 holes
