TRX450 Piston Kicks over.Electric Start will not.

    by smitty250x » Tue Oct 06, 2015 12:52 pm

    Hey fellas,

Had my local Honda mechanic rebuild my 2006 450X with a TRX piston and KW SS valves.

He called and told me the electric starter won't turn it over and it can be kicked but is very hard.

Can I use an Electric starter motor from the TRX450?
and could it be anythings else.

    Thanks.

The de-compressor is something we have talked about. It was all set by the factory specs. We are re-checking it.

would the trx piston need or justify a different gap?

No , the gap has to do with the valves and timing not the piston , in the sense that the type of piston is not so much as a factor as the compression of the piston is , the gap needs to be 0.014 period , if its 0.012 or 0.016 it will be enough to make a difference in how it starts , a higher compression piston will make it even more critical to get the gap correct , lower compression is more forgiving

If the decomp was set incorrectly, he may have already burned up the starter. If you get it set right, and it still doesn't work, I'd take the starter solenoid out and have it checked at a motor shop. You can get a rebuild kit and rebuild the starter for less than half the price of a new one.

I had this problem with my CRF450X. Found that the centrifugal weight spring was not on the weight and the keeper plate was not installed correctly. The weight was free floating in the assembly.

Also, if it;s that hard to turn over, stop kicking it. You don't want to bust anything. ;)
