New to this bike, lots of Questions

    by firegugg » Wed Jun 17, 2015 5:16 pm

    Hello All,

I just bought an 05 450X, so far I love it (basically looks, no real riding) I have a lot of questions and will be exhausting the search feature but I have a few quick hits if y'all can help...

I bought the bike and the guys said the fork seals need redone, he has all the parts but the fork oil is 10W, everything in the manual mentions 5W, which is better and why? Also is the 50 mm fork wrench the size I need?

I have a CRF 3 Kouba link, anyone wanna trade their CRF 4?

What other lowering tricks can I do? Mostly desert trail riding, with hill climbs, NO JUMPS, at least on purpose. Im a pansy I guess.

Thanks for any information and I'm sure more questions/ curiosities will come up. This is my first 4 stroke. And I'm making the jump from a YZ 125...I know BIG jump

You want to run 5 wt , not 10 wt , 10 wt is for heavy street bikes not dirt bikes , the lighter 5 wt is made to go thru the valving easier so the suspension works properly , having the thicker 10 wt would be like running syrup thru the valving , it would not open when it should and would be open longer than it should , street bikes do not go over jumps and such so the valving does not do as much work as with a dirt bike , so the oil can be thicker , as the most you would encounter is a pothole in the street (hopefully that makes sense for you , and answered your question why)

Yes the 50mm wrench is what you want

I have the 4 but i like it so ....sorry ....lol , you can lower the ride height slightly by cutting the seat foam , though that does make for a stiffer ride when sitting , all you cut is the area near the front , and leave the back as is , like taking a scoop out of it

Also with the link your forks should be 4mm UP in the clamps , that will help with the height as well , the only other way is to internally lower the suspension by having limiters installed , though the ride is significantly decrease , so i dont recommend that unless absolutely the last resort

If you do go with the 4 (1.75) , then you will set your sag at 80mm not 100mm and go to 6mm up in the clamps on the forks
