    450R triple clamps

    by woodchuck » Sun May 24, 2015 12:37 pm

Alright, I'm getting myself all confused and need some advice. I have an 06 CRF450X that I ride mostly motocross (and have largely converted the bike to be more R like). I understand some of the R triple clamps have a different offset and may be better for MX. Which years of R clamps should I be looking at?

So from various online searches, I think the 2008 CRF450R triple clamp is the one I need. I'm not sure if there is a range of years that will work though? 20mm offset is the name of the game, I think.

All R clamps up to 07 (02-07) are 24mm just like the X , 08 has the damper setup , but i believe is 22mm offset

Track riding a X , even if you removed the starter and everything to get the weight down is still going to be about 25 lbs heavier than a R , because the frame is different and bulkier , and the wider cases and larger/wider tranny gears , so the X on a track is still going to be cumbersome , and not as easily tamed as a R , and if your going to remove the starter and everything to get the weight down , then your better off with a used R (i like my 02 for the track)

My 02R weighs 232 full of gas , about 220 without gas , a modded out X will weigh about 245 (about what a 250X weighs) , a stock 450X will weigh about 265 , either way in the corners its going to push like a plow in the field because of all the inertia from the extra weight

In other words , no matter what you do , it will not work like a R , i have both bikes , and the X just does not like to turn and its because of the weight not the clamps in my opinion , it will turn better with less offset , but it still wont handle like a R on the track

Closing the loop on this, I got a triple clamp for an 08' CRF250R. It does appear to be about 2mm different than the original, but it's awfully hard to measure. The turn in on the bike does feel much better, IMO and I can now run a proper number plate!!!

Look at the bottom of the clamps (underneath ) I believe their offset is cast into them

You are right! The OE 450X triple clamps say 24 and the 08' 250X's say 22. So there is the confirmation. They were $80 on ebay, if anyone is interested.
