    Plated!

    by rschlegel » Sat Mar 28, 2015 3:28 am

Took a couple weeks working a little at a time but finished getting the bike ready for inspection. The inspection was quick and easy. According to DMV, the dealership collected county taxes when they should not have so I had to pay them again and have to try to get the dealership to refund me from a purchase in 2010.
$209 to title the bike and get my plate.
Made a test ride and found that that I can go further than I thought. With the 1.9 gallon tank I rode 75 miles mostly being mountain dirt and asphalt and it took 1.2 gallons to fill up.
Highway between 55-60 mph it cruises at 7,000 rpm.
Does anyone know how much going down two teeth on the rear would affect trail riding?

I cannot tell you about the effects of one tooth down in the rear but I can tell you I went up one on the front [which equals approx -4 to the rear], I found very little seat of the pants difference sgl track riding but helped greatly on the street riding. I was very happy with the change and it is a very easy a cheap way to drop the rpm's for street use.
    Just my 2 cents.

Ken has a gearing chart here on CRF's if you want to get into the exact rpm effects of gearing changes.

Thanks. Any clearance issues going up one on the front? Did the stock chain length work?

No clearance issues. It actually takes a little stress off the chain by relieving some of the tension making the bend around the sprocket. It also takes a little wear off the swingarm guide plate by slightly raising the chain.

Yes the OEM chain length has enough to easily fit the extra tooth front sprocket.
I was very happy with it. I was concerned I would lose the low end grunt. I found it was only a slight loss and was worth it for the lower rpm's and more top end.

Easy thing to try & see if it works for you and very reseanable. If I was not going to use my "X" on the street I would not do it but since I use it to run around a little bit it worked great.

I think I will. I just got back from a 65 mile ride and 55mph runs 6950rpm. It has been interesting having the vapor computer. Running around at 55 the engine temp was 145f and went to 151 when going about 35mph. Did a little single track and was up to 191f.
    Thanks for the added info.

250 miles since plating. I ended up going 1 up on the cs sprocket and it was great. Just finished installing the IMS 4 gallon tank also. Did a 120 mile ride Saturday just over half on dirt and it was great! Only problem is that stock seat for the paved sections. Has anyone tried the Corbin seat?
