    No choke needed?

    by Four-Fifty-X » Sat Dec 06, 2014 6:08 pm

My X had recently developed a serious hanging idle problem, so I pulled the carb off and cleaned it really, really well. A few passages were in fact gummed up pretty good.

The bike now runs good and no longer has a hanging idle.

The strange thing is it no longer requires the choke to start when cold, and the choke barely raises RPMs at all.

Should I be concerned about this at all?

Is this likely a result of it being way too rich on the pilot circuit?

    Thanks.

    Running:

    170
    48
    JD Red, 4th clip
    MRD R header
    R cam
Open air box, no screen, twinair

I have run the jetting combo (170/48 ) at about 500 ft elevation before , but had normal choke operation , whats the starting procedure thats working without the choke , and what is the ambient temp ???

Jim, 70 degrees give or take a few...

I give the throttle 3 or 4 good quick twists, leave the throttle closed, then push the button.

I used the choke a few times and noticed that when I turned it off, the Rs didn't really drop, so I stopped using it.

Also, after I washed my bike yesterday, I had to use the hot start to get it going. I wouldn't start cold with our without the choke...

Engine cranking slow ?? , decompressor gap ??

At that temp , even sitting for a while the bike might not need the choke , , when riding in temps above 65 here , i just give it about 6 good twists and the bike will start , with a 45/162 at 2500 ft , basically when the fuel is able to atomize , it does not really need a choke , that is why top fuel dragsters can be primed with fuel and start easily without a choke system , if the fuel atomizes , the bike will start , the choke is just a way to richen the mixture , so the more you pump the throttle before starting , the richer you make the starting mixture , if you had to use the Hot Start then your leaning the mixture , generally in hotter temps you want to run leaner , in colder temps , richer , maybe go back to a 45 pilot and see how it starts then

At least that is the way i think it works , so i think your fine , but if you have a 45 , try it and see if it helps

The best carb guy around here is leardriver , PM him and see if he knows what to make of it
