Cracked wheel...New wheel stock hub question

    by kolt61 » Sat Nov 08, 2014 9:39 am

While changing my tire I discovered I had a crack in my front wheel. I'm Thinking of replacing stock wheel with a D.I.D. Dirt Star Black ST-X. I would like to keep my stock hub. My question is what spokes are my best option for this setup? I'm Thinking about getting Bulldog Stainless Steel Spoke Kit. Will these fit both the wheel and hub? Is there a better setup. Thanks.

When it comes to spokes few aftermarket ones exceed the weight vs strength benefit of OE. Keeping in mind unsprung weight I would stick with OE unless you really want to drop some coin. With that said good luck truing the wheel. I did my first one last week its not fun. For what its worth I have had great luck with Tusk hoops and you can get them in black.

I also believe that the Bulldog Spokes require you to drill out the spoke holes slightly , so keep that in mind if you decide on them , because if you ever change spokes again , you will need to get the same kind because stock spokes will no longer fit properly , also something to keep in mind to tell a potential buyer if you ever decide to sell the bike , a lot of times the wheel manufacturer recommends you use their spokes , i know Pro Wheel allows the use of stock spokes or theirs , as does Excell i believe

Either stay with the stock parts or change out hub, rim, spokes from a different source as a complete set. Jim rightly pointed out it stops confusion down the track, like next time you have wheel damage. I also believe it is safer to have manufacturer matched parts so spokes and nipples fit correctly. Saves you going nuts when lacing it up too.

+1 on the Pro wheels my son can't kill them.

The Bulldog spokes will require you to slightly enlarge the spoke holes in the hubs. This is not an uncommon process and actually a lot of high level pro teams do this.

Unless you are taco-ing wheels on a regular basis, I would stick with stock sizes (OEM).
