Backfire screen

I appologize if this has been asked before, and especially because many would consider this a pretty elementary question. However, here goes ...
What exactly is the backfire screen and how do I remove it. Is it the screen on the cage the air filter element is mounted over, or is there another screen inside somewhere. My wife's TTR225 has an actual metal screen in the air box outlet, wondering if there's something similar I can remove on mine, or if it's just a matter of cutting the mesh out of the filter cage.
I admit, I haven't yet removed the air filter element as the bike only has minutes on it. Doubt we're even at an hour yet, and the filter is still new.
