Im sitting here half sick to my stomach. I have a brand new 2013 450x. I got all the same parts I had on my 06' 450X and I get to the damn fuel screw to replace it with the R&D flex screw. My damn carb has a friggin' plug in that I dont know to get it out. If I had known that it was plugged I probably would have just left it stock. Can any one give me some help with this. I dont know what to do. I have every thing all ready to go, exhaust , JD jet kit, Twinair sealing ring, air box cut. I'm pissed! If you can help,please do. Thank you. Andy

I have not messed with a 13 yet

but

You should be able to pop out or drill out the plug or maybe unscrew the plug , the fuel screw will be under it and remove normally

I really cant see any other way to get it out. Drilling makes me nervous. I plan on drilling unless someone has a different method? Thank you for the reply JD.

Honda has been using plugs to cover the air/fuel screws for decades. It has to do with California emissions? It is a standard procedure (you can find it in many service manuals)to drill a small hole so the cap can be pulled out.
It does not need to be replaced.
Wrap lots of gray tape about 1/8” from the tip to act as a stop. Use a new/sharp bit and be slow and deliberate. You will be fine.
Use the force young padawan.

Thats what i like about the 06 , no smog pipes or crap , and no plug on the fuel screw and it came with a 2.3 tank instead of a 1.9 (stupid for off road) , but , for some reason they feel everyone has to comply to California emissions and they dont want you to adjust anything

I used to have 2006 model and everything was easy peasy with hop ups.
I figured it would be the same with this new one. Just felt horrible having to drill on it and possibly screwing it up

Yea , i had a new 87 Toyota truck and it had the 22R with a carb , i lived in California at the time , i had to drill out the plug on it to adjust the air screw , its just the EPA that is doing this , the manufacturers don't want to do it , but they have to in order to sell them in Cal , and now they want every state to conform to Ca standards , its stupid , and all it does is make more work for the enthusiasts that want their cars or dirt bikes to actually run worth a crap

And that is why i still have my 06 , i got it new and honestly , there is nothing on the new ones that interest me , i would have to add more hop ups then i already have on mine , just to get it to run close to what mine already runs like , so i am already ahead of the game by keeping what i have had , about the only thing they would do that would interest me in a new one would be FI , but if its going to add another 20 lbs , then i would rather do without it

I went a few years without a bike. I really regretted getting rid of my x. It was a great bike all the good mods done, exhaust, cam, jetted. It ran really nice. I figured I would get another and now I have to deal with all this Califonia bs. I just want to get back to were my 06 was. I just hope I can get this carb straightened out with out messing it up. I hate even having a new bike all torn apart. I kind of wish I would have bought the 450r.I ride tight trails anyways

All you need to do is jet it for your elevation , cut the top of the airbox (you dont have to do this , but it helps) , put a 52 rear sprocket , and maybe a HotCams Stage 1 , and it will be a reliable non stalling (unless you really screw up) fun trail bike (though i also recommend re-valving the suspension and springing it for your weight)

So minimum

52 rear sprocket
Re-jet for elevation
1.6 bar radiator cap
Engine Ice coolant

Woah, no need to drill anything. It's a D shaped fuel screw, either get a D shaped tool or an electrical connector/butt can be shaped or even easier is to just remove the float bowl and then it will unscrew in your hand using a pair of pliers!!!!!!

I know mine did not have anything resembling a plug , and the fuel screw was a slot on mine not D shaped (i got mine brand new in 06) but mine is a non Calif , non smog model, it had no smog pipe on the cylinder , so maybe they do them differently depending on the restrictions on them in the particular state they are first sold , since he seems to be back east , maybe the restrictions/specs there are not the same as Calif , or Idaho (though i have not personally looked to see if there is a plug on the 12/13's at the dealers here yet)

I had an '06 too, which had the slotted fuel screw. The newer models changed to a "Tamper Proof" design, I don't think he has a plug, he's just confused the D shaped with a plug because it's not adjustable... But it is with the right tool!
