Trail Tech Vapor Power hook up

Ok. I got a Trail tech Vapor. It says to hook it straight to the battery. But then the light will be on it the whole time. I was going to hook it to the head light so it would only power it when the engine is running. But the head light is AC. So with out running a switch off the battery, How else could I hook it up to only power when the engine is on? Photos would be nice.
2009 CRF450X is the bike.
Also.. does the shift lights only work when powered? I forgot to check.

It should only light up when you first hook it up for a minute or so after you set everything or after enough rotation of the front wheel that the pickup magnet passes the sensor , it should be on a timer of sorts just like newer cars that have the headlights that stay on long enough for you to get in your house , then they shut off , i have the Striker (like the Vector but with a Volt reading)on my 450X and it lights up when the wheel moves enough to activate the sensor , then if not moved it shuts off within about 1 minute or so , it hooks direct to the battery (i run it thru a inline fuse)and when the bike sits for a minute or 2 it will shut off as long as you dont touch any of the buttons , any time you touch a button the light will come on for the predetermined time

Ok maybe I read it wrong. It sas when hooked to a battery it will stay on all the time. maybe they just mean while activated. Let me let it sit for a true 20 minutes and see what happens. It should go off....

Parts & Features

Vapor is equipped with a backlight for easy viewing during night-time
operation.
Using External 12V Power:
• Vapor will light up with all five LED’s.
• Vapor will remain lit as long as it senses wheel movement. After
20 minutes of inactivity Vapor shuts off the backlight. Press any
button, roll the wheels, or start the motor power and Vapor will light
up again
So apparently yes it is 20 minutes on your model , on mine its about 1 minute of inactivity , it wont draw enough power during that time to give any concern , it would have to remain on for a couple days to kill the battery and according to the instructions it says to connect directly to the battery (same as my unit)

Installation
If possible, install Vapor to a 12
volt system:
• The backlight will be 10 times
brighter.
• Vapor will enter sleep mode
after 20 minutes instead of 5.
• The shift and and temperature
indicator LED’s will be
enabled.
OPTION 1) BATTERY WIRED:
Connect the power cables
directly to the vehicle’s 12 volt battery. A 0.5A fuse (not provided)
should be used between the power cable and positve battery terminal
when connecting directly to a battery.

Jim is right about the vapor going into power saver mode after 20 minutes, I think only the clock stays running.
If you want to completely remove power when not running you can run it off the rear LED lights. Black is power and Grey is ground. I split a lead off from the LED to the front of my bike so I could power a horn, GPS and VAPOR only while running.

I had the same concerns about it being powered all the time, but I fallowed the instructions and I have never had any issues.

Yes, I just saw that having it hooked to a 12v source keeps it on.. and after about 10 minutes it still didnt shut off so I thought it would be on for ever.

Does anybody know what the water temperature warning lights be should set to? for a 450x (I think I set the yellow for 185 and the red at 220.)

I think i am somewhere around there , i have my max set at 235 , all you have to do is reset it and raise it a few degrees if the light comes on too soon

On my 250X, I set the warnings at yellow = 240 and red = 250. Typically the bike runs about 200, can get up into the 220's in tight single track when it's really working hard.
Your coolant boils at 265, so I figure at 240 I should be aware of it, and think about shutting it down at 250, just to be on the safe side...

I also thought about my truck. Normal operating temp is 210, and the gauge goes up to 260, so I figure I've got it pretty close.

If it helps, the cooling fan sensor switches that I have seen for dirt bikes kick on between 198 an 218 depending on the bike. Also, the pressure builds high enough to push coolant past the cap long before the coolant boils - in my experience, 230 is more than hot enough to get this done, with some bikes puking antifreeze around 220.

This is what I was expecting. I might raise my yellow to 190 and leave my red at 220.
I run engine ice and have never had it boil.

Also if you run a aftermarket radiator cap you can get the pressure to 1.6 or 1.8 from the stock 1.1 Bar, i have 1.6 on both my bikes along with Engine Ice (which is supposed to drop temps by 50 degree's), that will raise the temps before it will boil over , and i think my fan kicks on at 198 or somewhere close to that

I noticed that nobody had/has an issue with mounting the speedo sensor, i must be challenged or something! I drilled the 1/8 hole and mounted on the front caliper where stated but it hits all the bolts on the front disk.
