Gas tank/cap question

Hi all, I bought a used tank and I'm not sure what brand it is. It holds a little over 3 gallons and it's black. The question is this:
the stock gas cap leaks because it bottoms on the tank itself. Are the billet replacement caps shorter so I won't have this bottoming problem
or do I need to buy the IMS replacement cap (assuming it is an ims)

thanks for the guidance!

+1 on the pic, but I think that IMS will take the stock cap, where Clarke and maybe Acerbis require vendor specific.

IMS requires a specific cap as well. I believe you can force the OEM cap to thread on, but it will never seal up.

IMS has just redesigned their cap. Make sure you are getting the latest version or it will leak.

pics (I hope)

fabulous! So can i use one of the billet caps then or do I have to buy an ims one? this stock one would fit if it wasn't so deep and bottomed.

Gotta be an IMS...but be careful. They just redesigned the cap to a non-leaking unit. Make damn sure it's the most recent cap before you buy it. The 1st and 2nd Generation caps leaked.

Yep, what AS said. Your best bet is to call IMS and tell them about your problem, you might find they have excellent customer service ;)

Good to know! We picked up a used bike with an IMS tank - was told the cap was stock :?

There are billet alternatives for the IMS tank. I have no experience with them but they do exist. Here's links to two of them that are available here:

i have the project 321 cap and have never had any issues. great cap.

ims hasn't changed their thread/diameter of their caps. however, they did have a bad batch of seals which has been resolved. brp gets their seals from ims and as a result they too had the same problems but they now have the new seals as well.
