    450r exhaust on a 450x

    by afc1261 » Sat Oct 01, 2005 9:44 am

Has anyone out there put a 450r pipe on a 450x? I bought what appears to be a brand spankin new 450r pipe from a local guy who replaced his stock 450r pipe with a new aftermarket pipe. IS it worth trying and will it even fit on the 450x header pipe? It only cost me 75 bucks. If you've tried this....How did it sound?

yes it does fit on, i removed my t-4 pipe and fitted a complete 450r system on my x and its quieter, also fitted a powernow insert to regain a bit of low end i lost with fitting the larger and shorter headerpipe.
    this thing rips.

Honda suggests running the 'R' header on the 'X' to enhance performance.

But the 'R' muffler itself may require some tinkering to make work. I'm guessing the bracket won't line up.

I'd run the "R" header and the "X" muffler. Looking for an 'R' header right now for myself.

So to clarify... An 450r system will directly bolt on to a 450x. Furthermore, fitting a 450r header pipe gains performance per honda. Is this correct?

One of the things the Honda Rider's Wrench reports states as an upgrade to the X is to use the R header pipe. This is along with several other mods including the R cam, cutting the airbox, and rejetting the carb. Will the R header make a difference? I would assume as it is bigger.

I'm searching for clarity on this issue as well.

Are we saying the full R system will or will not work as a direct bolt-on for the X??

I have the R, my bud has the X, I'm getting an aftermarket system, he's wanting my stock R stuff for his X. Will this or will this not direct bolt on?

Someone made the comment that the stock R stuff will quiet down the X, that seems backwards, my R is cubically louder than his X...
sorry ya'll, i've got back to the darkside...

If I understand correctly the 'R' header pipe will work but the 'R' muffler will not, at least without modifications being made. I think the attachment flange on the frame is in a different location as the 'X' muffler is tucked up under the bike more than an 'R.'

    moolooman,
i have heard ,and read somewhere that, the R header moves some low end grunt up to the top, due to the header length difference. Honda states they purposefully increased header length on the X to increase low end torque.
can you tell us what the R header did for you?

I just received an email from an Akrapovic rep who says their 'R' exhaust WILL NOT fix the 'X' model.

Also, someone else on here just the other day said they purchased a whole system for the "R" to put on their X and it would not fit. I believe it was a Pro-Circuit system.

    450r muffler on 450x

    by moolooman » Thu Oct 06, 2005 3:43 pm

yes it did lose a small amount of low end but the midrange is a lot stronger. then i fitted a powernow insert and regained the low to midrange power, but its a lot stronger and revs quicker, going to try a 48t rear sprocket later as it gets into 5th pretty quick. havent got time now its pissing down with rain.

what do you think man? the R headers are easy to come by. {Supermoto takeoffs}. would a small low end loss hurt me on the steep mtn. singletracks?
moolooman has that monster humidity goin on down in kiwiland. how would that affect his use of the R header versus us, if we were to use it? what's the meaning of stonehenge? where's amelia earhart? will
Ted Kennedy ever see his ears again? will my wife find out if i buy an R header and a Powernow?
these and many other questions to be answered right after these crass commercial interruptions. shutup paul!

Maybe this was talked about and I read over it but wouldn't it make sense to use the R header with the X silencer?
Here's what I did to mod my stock X silencer. I removed the sparky screen completely. I cut off 2 of the 3 baffles, and ground the one that I left down to nothing. the point is, if a C/O try's to stick something in there to see if it is restricted, it will stop. This really helped performance noticeably and gives it a perfect sound. Raised a few decibals from stock but gives the bike a nice wrap when you get after it. I am thinking that set up like this, it might compliment the R header well by keeping some of that low end.
The other question is this. I heard that the X header had that drop in it because the radiator was bigger than the R. I assume that is a non issue.
Bottom line is, will the R header adapt to the X silencer???

I'm running stock exhaust w/ the baffle out so I'm far from being the resident expert. I was only responding to moolooman's comment how the R system is a direct bolt-on with no modification. I am told otherwise by Akrapovic. They told me their 'R' system would NOT fit an 'X.'

Yes I agree it'd make sense to run the 'R' header with the stock/aftermarket X muffler as it's larger in diameter. Honda even suggests doing so.

So the answer to JBMason's question would be yes, the R header will fit the X muffler. In the Honda Riders Wrench report they specify doing just that.

I'd like to have a pull-off R header myself if anyone comes across one cheap.
