    Honda air filter sealing grease

    by In2deep » Fri Jan 26, 2007 7:13 pm

Is it me or is this stuff complete junk?

Seriously. I bought it when I bought my bike. I opened it put a dab on the rim of the filter and thought "I am not putting green watery frosting on my air filter" I have since been using the Maxima waterproof grease which I am sure some will say is dumb but it seals well so I use it.

I bought a new air filter today and thought I would try the honda stuff again since I was looking for something I would not need a strong solvent to clean. Again I put some on and it just does not look like it can be trusted to seal well. It is thin and watery, no stick whatsoever.

Is this how it (the honda grease) is supposed to be?
    What do you use?

I didn't feel comfortable with the grease either so I found this online-see below. You clean the inside of your airbox and take off the outside strip of two sided tape on the backside of the PC Racing Pro Seal Air Filter Gasket and attach it to the inside of your airbox. It takes about ten minutes to install, with most of that time being used to clean your airbox. I've used it for about six months with no problems.

    Sean,

we use the Honda grease (green frosting).

It separates with time. You need to knead the tube a bit and it reconstitutes. Forms a thick paste.

Stuff works well and cleans off well.

No dust inside the filter area.

AS that is almost what I suspected.

I realized it separated so I shook and kneaded it for a long while. It still had granules in it and was a bit thin. I wonder if it has a shelf life?

    Sean

the Honda air filter treatment items are No Toil products, rebadged.
i also use the No Toil products, and love them.
i do not use their air filters though.

    So it is just me....
    :/
Well..knead, shake, knead, shake. Now I have watery smooth stuff.
I must have gotten a bad batch.

So for now it is maxima grease and uni spray cleaner and oil. I have been very happy with that combo, I just thought the soap and water cleanings might be a plus. 8-)

It just doesn't make sense to switch to a water washable oil like "No toil" and then use grease that requires a solvent to clean.

Stay all water or go all oil. Half and half does not compute...

I've always just used some type of waterproof grease. Usually Maxima, but right now I have a tub of Yamaha grease. I needed some, and that's all they had at this new Yamaha dealership.
