how much fork oil do you need if the fork is completely empty? I thought I heard that a little less than the book says allowed the fork to be a little plusher

If it's too stiff everywhere that is true, but you should first try the rebound and compression clickers.
Your manual says if you let them drain about 5 hours inverted you will still have about 8cc's left in them at about 70 degrees, check out pg's.85 and 86.
It shows capacity of 306-402cc's each leg.
Pg's .127-128 have a great section on tuning your forks for your preferences, you need to figure out where you want it stiffer, for instance if for you it's too stiff throughout the section suggests removing 5cc for each leg,and to soften the rebound and compression in one click increments.
Read the whole Suspension Adjustment guidelines section and you'll get a great education on setting up your bike,it's very well done. Doug
