New Gaerne SG10 boots seem to crush my ankles.

    by buckboss1 » Tue Jan 23, 2007 8:30 pm

As I type this, I'm sitting here in my Family Room with my new Gaerne SG10 boots on. They look awesome. They feel ok, except for around the ankle area. Did any of you SG10 owners notice that they feel like they are squeezing the balls of your ankles? My ankles aren't fat either, I'm 6' and weigh 167lbs. wet. Maybe the problem is I need to actually where them while riding my bike. Uh, but then I can't return them.

Ride with them. you can pretty much return anything that dosen't satisfy you, should you need to.
a boot that works well with your foot, will be out of your mind in the first 15 minutes of a real ride.

Take the paper packing out. OK, the tightness thing sounds weird but like PT said try riding with them, make sure the straps are a little loose for the breakin, the buckles adjust too with screws....

OK if you don't get along with them after a few rides you can always sell them here or on Ebay.

Everybodys anatomy is different of course , but that sure seems like it could be a problem. I agree with Paul, you should be able to return/exchange anything,.
If you get them really dirty though I'd be worried. If they are going to rub on your ankle bones in such a way that by wearing them around the house and walking they give you a sore spot they're just not going to work for your foot and ankle.
Tech 10's have VERY cushy and soft ankle areas, they hold your foot tight but man are they plush on the inside.
    I know they're expensive, but heck, you've already spent 300 ! :D Doug

I have SG10's and have never had any comfort problems (ankles or otherwise). I do not wear them around the house though.

I'd talk to the shop/store where you bought them and find out their willingness to let you return them after you've been riding in them.

I went to a size 12 because the 11's were way too tight in the ankles..the 12's feel like heaven.

I bought them from an on-line store, www.derbycycles.com, $259 plus $10 shipping. They're return policy is 15% restock fee, unless return is for a size issue. I don't think I can wear a 13. The 12 fits length wise, it just feels narrow around the ankle area. I think I'll wear them around the house some more, and maybe they will loosen up. Paul, you may be right, once you're into a good ride you kinda don't notice little quirks. By the way, the guy that answers the phone at Derby Cycles gets an "F" for customer service. I called him twice, and each time he acts like I'm bothering him. Makes me mad.

Buck, sorry to hear about your fit problems. Do you normally wear a size 12 shoe? They for sure should not be hurting your ankles. They should be so comfy you could sleep in them. If you totally undo the buckle down by the ankle does it release the pressure? If so, the strap is too small for your unusually large ankles ;) .

Gaerne makes longer straps and I would recommend getting the longer strap. I would not go riding in them, hoping they will just break in and the ankle thing will go away. You bought a top of the line boot and it should feel that way right out of the box. Good luck!

I agree on the fit issue. Years ago I had a pair of Answers that I stubbornly kept for a couple of seasons thinking they would break in and get comfortable AND THEY NEVER DID
