Why 1 quart in the transmission?

    by Nicks450x » Tue Jan 16, 2007 6:29 pm

I noticed on a couple post that many of you recommend 1 US qt. on the transmission side. The manual recomends 0.79 of a qt. Will this extra fluid blow out seals?

It's all about preventing damage to the tranny from not getting enough lube to the tranny. There were issues early on, especially with riders that were running on the road for long periods, where the tranny would lock up. The cure for this is to run a full quart in the tranny. This insures that enough gets splashed around to keep things properly lubed. It doesn't hurt the bike at all. We all do it. It's a safety precaution.

The reason for the full qt. is because of the design of the tranny, it sometimes doesnt throw the oil on the gears when running at long stretches in a givin gear , such as riding a long stretch in 4th or 5th gear on the highway or some long back road, so what the extra oil does is insure lubrication of the gears since they are now immersed in oil .

And NO it wont blow out the seals, there isn't sufficent pressure to blow the seals
Its just a way to insure proper lubrication so the gears don't run dry, since thats what causes the majority of the tranny failures with the X's and R's

Thats A big 10-4 on useing A full quart in the tranny, like said earlier we all do it,just make sure when you drain the tranny to rock the bike back and forth A few times to get all the oil out from the nooks and crannys.

For the motor oil side do not use A full quart but use the recomended amount specified and go by the dipstick.

I've always gone by when it drains out the bottom on the tranny side and usually is close to a quart... Now I just need to change the oils as I think about this.

Exactly, and it's easy to just pour the whole bottle in! I run it, for pure laziness, not because of the tranny problems.

do you guys know if it is also okay or a good idea to run a full quart in the 250R?
South-Eastern Idaho sucks, so Californians should move somewhere else! :)

I wouldn't, since I don't hear or read anything about 250X's or R's having any problems. Doug

Never. iF i start to see a leak I'll think about it then!

On the quart issue, i put 850-900ml in depending on what side of the bed i got out of that day!
