I notice all the shark fins or brake disc protetors don't protect the bottom of the disc from rocks/mud and suck coming up from front wheel like the stock one does
is that the case?

I have wondered the same thing. The stock plastic guard wraps under the disc, and protects it from direct hits (although not very big hits). The Scotts and the CRF's Only ones hang down lower than the disc, right next to the disc, but do not wrap underneath. Should this cause concern?

I think with the shape of the tire it is unlikely that you would have an impact on the edge of the rotor that would not also hit the sharkfin.

Have you heard of anyone messing up a disc with an aftermarket brake guard? They've been around a while and with so many companies making them I'd bet they do a pretty good job and it shouldn't be a concern. If it was I'm sure they'd build that into the product.

My take:

With any type of metal guard versus a plastic guard with the lip underneath the disc the issue now becomes: With a hard hit to any solid object this may bend the lip into the disc and cause issues out on the trail. Instead the metal guards are merely designed to help deflect solid objects from semi-direct hits.

I think the idea should be carried to the back as it is with the stock one

That's exactly what I was getting ready to post. The good aftermarket ones work great, I wouldn't be worrying about it.

the fronts are plastic and mainly for brush and debris...you are conscious of where your front tire goes the back not so much (make sense?)

Totally agree with this post. As a matter of fact I don't even run a front guard cause I'm definitely not going to hit anything with it. The back is another story.

you really wouldn't want one made of metal to "wrap under" the disc. this would allow mud and rocks to gather there and would end up causing more problems than they would solve. the primary purpose of the shark fin is to prevent the disc from bending/warping from impact which would occur from a glancing or side impact. the caliper carrier-type we carry do a great job of providing this type of protection.

one more thing with the al wrap (ie devol)i don't think i would ever run it for the fact if you did hit something and it bent into it, it would bind until you could take it off-----good idea in theory, not so much in reality
