    Clutch Cover

    by Vee5 » Sun Dec 24, 2006 11:39 am

I don't recall ever seeing this mentioned in the forum before, so here it is- Pardon me if it's a repeat!

Last week I had a pretty mild fall to the right side of the bike during a GP in CalCity. Luckily for my bike, I twisted my knee and spent a little time "walking it off". During that time I discovered oil leaking at a fast drip from the clutch cover. It turns out that the rear brake pedal flexed enough to punch a small hole in the cover. Had I not twisted my knee, I would have jumped back on and rode until the oil was gone and the tranny seized.

Ironically, when I bought my bike, the salesman told me it would be a good idea to file off a couple of teeth from the brake pedal to keep this from happening. Having no "bling" factor and being inherently lazy, I pretty much disregarded this good advice.

I am now sporting the ProCircuit billet aluminum clutch cover and have filed off a total of four teeth (two in front and two in back) from the brake pedal.

At the very least, I would suggest a quick visual inspection of the clutch cover every time your bike goes down on the right side.

Hope this info helps and that everyone has a great Christmas.

I would also suggest you lower your brake pedal as low as you can.

I had filed my lever but on the next ride I punched a hole in my cover, over a thousand miles later it is still holding (I love JB quick!)

Yesterday up on a beautiful mountain ridge I helped repair CRF's only member 82911sc's cover.....we lowered his shaved brake lever as well.

I personally went with the oversized Rekluse clutch cover. Now when I save enough dough, I can actually buy a Rekluse clutch. Until then, I can add a full quart of tranny juice and have no worries of my trans locking up from lack of lubrication.

With the oversized cover I'd put a little more than a quart in the trans. I can't remember how much more oil Rekluse recommends with their cover but you should look into it. 1 full quart is if you are running the stock cover.

The oversized cover doesn't add that much more capacity. I believe you are still overfilling with a quart. I have been running a quart with the larger SFB (with a JB repair :-) cover.

Luckily I'd just done an oil change and went with the full quart on the trans side, so I felt pretty comfortable to cruise the 2 or 3 miles back to the pits with the oil leak.

Also, thanks for the tip on lowering the brake pedal. Are alot of you guys out there running with a JB Weld patch on your covers already? I just didn't like the thought of it happening again in a remote location far from camp, so I went directly to the billet aluminum model.

Yes, on a larger capacity SFB cover. I never damaged my stock cover and considered putting it back on, but I prefer the SFB so I have continued to use it with no problems and have a spare with the stock unit.

I have already gone through 2 stock covers, and ordered the SFB. The silly part is I haven't gone down on the bike and still I have damaged the eggshell that was the stock cover. Magnesium may be light but it also is brittle.

Same thing happened to me. A little JB and some filing down of the inside teeth on the brake lever, and I have been golden since.
