I have a R exhaust on my X as well (the can anyway). 165 or 170 should be about right. I initially tried a 165, and mid- and full- throttle at mid- and low- RPMs was not good. The 170 fixed that for me.

Also, I REALLY think you ought to open up that air box now. With the freer breathing exhaust and richer jetting, I think it's a mistake not to...

    Well !!
I tried drilling my stock 142, but i think i went a bit to far, i went to about a 180 and it blubbers half to full throttle  ,*edit*i went from 1-4 on the needle and it lost bottom at 1(2 is stock) and blubbered at 3-4 , so its the main jet *end edit*, everything is closed today so tomorrow i was going to Nampa*about 30 miles from here* to Pro Moto Billet to pick up a few things, and i will stop by a bike shop to pick up a few jets(150-165)(we were out of Kehin jets where i work) and mess with it some more , i opened up the sides of the airbox and put some nylon screen over the openings to keep the debris out , i didnt hack the top , i'm going to leave it and just jet down a bit , the pilot seems fine and the response is good 0-1/2 ,it idles fine ,and starts right up , its just the top thats fat , so a little tweaking and all should be well !! according to the micro fisc at bikebandit.com, the 04 and 05 pipes and silencers are the same. so they should both fit an 05 crf450x.

I just received an email from an Akrapovic rep who says their 'R' exhaust WILL NOT fix the 'X' model.

Also, someone else on here just the other day said they purchased a whole system for the "R" to put on their X and it would not fit. I believe it was a Pro-Circuit system.

The only R exhaust can that will fit the X is the 2005 model. The 2005 bolts right up to the 2005 X. I'm hearing that if you go with the R full system that you will lose some of the low end grunt that the X has. Ernie

Are you running the stock X header pipe? Ernie

i wonder why bike bandit's diagram says that 2004 and 2005 are the same pipe? can anyone confirm that they are different because i just bought an 04 muffler off of ebay. it should be here by the end of next week so i guess i'll know for sure then. that'll suck if it don't fit.

ok guys, got my 2004 crf450r muffler today. guess what? it don't fit! well, none of the holes on the brackets line up anyway. but, with a little modification, it worked. i cut about an inch off of the pipe part of the muffler and it works good. i need to make a bracket for it on the pipe part to give it more stability. it actually feels pretty darn solid the way it is but i will make some kind of support for extra strength. the sound is awesome. can't wait to ride it now. here are some pics.

CRAP! It looks like I will have the same problem. I just bought a stock 2004 can off ebay. I bought it based on the fact that honda had the 04 and 05 exhaust listed the same. However it looks like the 04 mounts to the subframe and the 05 mounts to the main frame. Let me know if you have any luck with a bracket.

Sorry the hear that guys. Too bad you didn't search this forum first. We've about killed this subject. The 04 R pipes won't even work on the 05 R let alone the X.

yeah yeah yeah! heard it a hundred times from my mother. measure twice and cut once! LOL. anyway, i took the X out for a spin and it hauls rear with the 04 muffler. i only paid a hundred bucks for it so i am stoked with it. i would say it pulls a little harder than the stock muffler with the baffle mod but not much. it weighs about 2 to 3 lbs less too. anyone want to buy a modified stock X muffler?

Hey Dirt, how did you attach the pipe part of the exhaust to the bike?

I have an 05 X and have an 05R can on it. An 05 R header will also fit. I know the 05 will fit but I was told that is the only year that will fit. Look here
