This debate isn't about DD and whether he's a stand up guy or not. I'm sure he is.

If that's all you got from this exchange then I have done a poor job of communicating my point.

My Point is: Why do we have such a low expectation from Americans in this day and age?

When we were young nobody expected the Government to be there for us. We were taught to take care of ourselves, our family, our neighbors, our community.

    When did it change??

Damn 3 pages since I left work!
A couple things....DD I love your spirit man but you are naive and its not necessarily your fault.
Many of those people in LA are wards of the US government and live hand to mouth almost everyday. The modern Democrats helped create that world and they bought it hook, line and sinker.
In a world where even the poorest inner city athlete can become a millionaire cannot anyone take care of themselves? Although I am not a church goer (sp) but didn't the Bible say the Lord helps those that help themselves?. (he didn't mean looting). Those people lived in an artificially created city that the government warned them for DECADES that they didn't think they could protect it in a hurricane. Living in an ice cave and not keeping a blanket handy because the gov't has paid the heating bill for you for your entire life is ridiculous. The disasters are comparable in nature because it was the cause. The result and how people coped with it was AS's point, I think. Its a direct reflection of the current generation. Men committed suicide who were 4F in WWII. I think they would commit suicide if they were drafted today for the same cause. Different times doesn't mean sacrificing your values or integrity "to adjust".
    I'm out.

It changed with FDR and "The New Deal" back in the 30s. While it was well intentioned and some would argue necessary to deal with the depression, it started a bad trend of the American people feeling a sense of entitlement. Well at least 1/2 the American people, the other half are conservatives! ;)

a few things... Having worked in the Financial industry for the past 12years I have some observations...

    1. most generalizations and stereotypes about people are Accurate!!!

Actually that all I'm going to say I typed a huge thing and just decided to delete it opposed to offending anyone..(well maybe just a little bit since I can't leave things alone) :?
No one should ever expect anything from anyone other than themselves!! I don't and no one anywhere should.. If someones poor they can do something about if there homeless and jobless then maybe they should lay off the Meth... But seriously people just need to fend for themselves and get the F**k off welfare so that when I plan to retire I'll have more money for myself I'm sick of paying from every paycheck and Especially my commission checks for these people that are mostly just LAZY!!!!!! I saw so many of those people with the debit cards.. and I saw what they bought with them.. Most of them blew the money on stuff to resell or . they didn't need.. They should've bought food not Crack or Louie Voutan purses...or any sports team jerseys for that matter...(there was sooooo much fraud from Katrina it's absolutely rediculous---plus the worst part is we're the ones who foot the bill not 95% of the people affected by Katrina because they don't have jobs or pay taxes anyways but they expect to get whatever they can because thats how they were raised- Or should I say lack or being raised with good role models...)

Ok well I guess I'll leave at least that there..

I commend the people in that Community in Denver... Out of the goodness of their hearts they helped there fellow people... Not because they had to or because some idiots were on the news bitching but because they know how to do the right thing....

Oh boy, you guys got the patriot in me fired up.....

I don't think you can compare the two and the letter even states that in it by saying they haven't had a category 5 blizzard this early. It's Colorado, they deal with snow, they are used to it and prepared for it regardless of how much they had there were people that had food stored if even for a couple of days because they knew that every year there is a big snow storm and they can't leave the house. Katrina was a different story, never in those peoples lives had they had to worry about water in their living room and the town shutting down. Two completely different situations and not even closely comparable.

The government is far from perfect but FEMA did need to step in for Katrina and they should have done it sooner because they couldn't take care of it themselves. Did FEMA and the government need to step in for Colorado? No, they had it taken care of so no need to. Does that mean Colorado people are better, or a better state, um if you guys think so then go ahead, but your mistaken, America is America. Yes it's different from the east coast to west coast, but the core values and beliefs are the same. And until you've visited more than one coast you probably shouldn't state your opinion (I've visited over 30 states so far so I think it qualifies me to be opinionated).

As for hand outs and the welfare system. I feel it is one of our greatest assets as Americans but one of our worst exploited.

When a single mother is trying to work and raise a child but just can't afford health care or can't afford groceries we as Americans are there to help her and our future. As long as she's trying and working we should help, not everyone can have a great job, unfortunately not everyone is smart and some just can't make more than minimum wage (please take no offense if you are one of them).

Now for the lazy people that exploit welfare, they piss me off, they should be given the chair. Then again can you blame someone who is now in the 2nd or 3rd generation of this type of living? Odds are they aren't very smart and definitely not educated and they've been shown by their parents the easy way out. Why would someone work for minimum wage and not have health care and struggle to make it when they can just collect a check and have a better living without the work? It sounds like the smarter choice if you ask me.

Oh and while we are at it. Just one more thing I'd like to add. Look at all those military members protecting our country. The majority of them are enlisted. While they are taken care of, in the first few years of service a military member would actually qualify for food stamps and state help. That's right, the amount they make puts them in the poverty scale. But yet they risk their rear and their life and do it every day to keep your country safe and free so a bunch of us can sit here and bitch our ideas freely and uncensored (for the most part) on a message board.

So what, now that Saddam is dead we are turning on other states? Do we need to find a new country to mess with? I vote China.

Oh and with all the talk of spelling here is today's grammar tip....

    Horses are hung.
    Corrupt dictators are hanged.

LOL, I'd love to hear them. Just remember I don't take it personal. Any personal slams will get you put on "the list" (think Steve Buscheme in Billy Madison).
