My CRF450R should be here on Sunday!

Did you get it bud ?
    Man, I don't think there's anything as beautiful as a new dirt bike,anything !
THE FOLLOWING IS A JAB AT IDIOCY FROM DOBENT :
Hey mprentice -Don't forget to tear off the whole top end, clean all the oil out of the cylinder wall, rings, piston, then re-assemble.
Then start the bike, and hold the throttle wide open for 30 seconds at a time until the rev-limiter kicks in,cool to room temperature, then repeat 3 times to better "seat " the rings.
Make sure to check all your valves ! They're frequently WAY OFF from the factory .(Just kidding, just kidding !)
DISCLAIMER-Yeah,there really is a bunch who believe that crap, honest to God. There was just an article that interviewed some techs at Team Honda who rebuild all their factory and support motors during the season, and when they re-assemble a top end guess what ? They tell us to apply a thin coat of oil to the cylinder walls. Duh.
Seriously, congrats on the new bike. I'l bet tomorrow before you go to work you go to the garage and look at your new baby. That is,unless you dragged it in the house .

Yeah....haven't around here a whole lot lately. I guess your knee is all healed.

I like that black...looks stealthy....definitely, go for the black wheels...THAT will complete the look.

Yup...it arrived late yesterday. Heck DB, I wish it were new. Unfortunately, the Birthday Beagle couldn't afford a brand new one, but it's close. I got a well cared for 2005.

First things on the list, oil & filter change, valve check, suspension service (The right fork was little wet when it was unloaded from the truck), and for the most part, just go through the whole thing to make sure it's all tight and lubed before I ride it. The guy I bought it from supposedly took pretty good care of it, and from what I can tell it's pretty straight. It shows very little wear. It's freaking LOUD though...I must be spoiled with the quietness of the X. I might spring for a new muffler/spark arrestor down the road.

I can't wait to ride it though...I know I'm going to love it.

Both the Akrapovic on my R and the Yoshimura I had on my X if you have the quiet inserts in them will quiet it down a lot.
Your FMF's packing may be tired, too.
Did it include a quiet insert for that pipe? If not I'll bet FMF has one, they may even offer a spark arrestor and quiet insert or some combination of both.
That really is a good looking bike, I'll bet it was well taken care of. Doug

I think FMF makes a combination spark arrestor.quiet insert for that pipe, too. That Factory 4 exhaust on your R is supposed to be top shelf.Looks great.

awesome..thanks for the tip!! You just saved be some greenbacks buddy! The only thing I'm peturbed about is that leaking fork leg....other than that I'm excited as a dog on a fresh coon track.

I'm going to run it to a suspension shop we have in town here (GPS) and make sure it's valved and setup for my weight. I guess they'll adress the seal at the same time....

You're very welcome. maybe we can save you some more.
Did you try removing the dust seal for the leaky fork, and sticking a very thin feeler gauge or a camera film negative cut to a point, and cleaning out possible near microscopic sized crud out of there ? Just a speck or two can cause a temporary leak, and it's very common.
I know you're taking it to suspension shop anyhow, but it may be worth a go. Doug

So I can unhook that little spring-y ring thing and pull that black seal down from the upper tube and nothing will come out? I had read that somewhere, but was afraid to cram crud up in there, but I guess cutting it to a point would reduce that possibility. I have a feeling there's crud in there though, because I can see streaks on the fork where it was moved up and down. I tried to scrape it lightly perpendicular to the streaks with my fingernail just to make sure it wasn't actually a scratch/score in the tube, but from what i can tell no damage I will try the film trick tonight. Thanks

mprentice.. I did the same thing, but on the smaller 250F scale ...:)

However, I'm keeping my X and getting it back to Desert/Woods riding form.

man, that's the thing. IF I had stuff (variety) around me that gave me the REAL woods riding opportunities, I would keep it in a heartbeat. I love my X!! I've had the chance to ride it once in a real good woods ride at Durhamtown, and I was amazed. Mind you, I was riding in a group of 30 or so guys adn all were on just about every different bike you could imagine and from what I could see many were just fighting thier bikes in the slick stuff and the climbs. Two of the 450R's even started overheating and were spewing coolant out of thier overflows....I, on the other hand, was chugging through the toughest stuff effortlessly. It was a blast. And the E-Start....nothing beats it. Not a blip.....

Unfortunately, that type of riding comes once a year for me. the other 51 weeks out of the year is MX tracks and Ocala National Forest, which is nothing but flat, sugar-sand trails. Sure it's fun, but nowhere near what the bike was designed for.

I hope I don't regret my decision down the road. The X was fun while it lasted, and until my son gets tired of MX (which will probably never happen), I'm in it. I toyed with the idea of going dualsport before I did this, but my son begged me to go MX so we could keep riding together. I came to the conclusion that's really why I ride anyway, to spend time with him.

I'm 6'2' man. I would look silly with a step seat. I need a tall seat if anything. Anyway, I'm saving up for some totally rad black riding gear (hopefully shorts) - JK!

Prentice, I was wondering why you got the X. Then I realized your in florida. My riding environment if about 180 degrees from yours. Its been a year since I have "loaded up" and went to an "OPEN" place. Hopefully, a friend of mine will invite me to his private GNCC track in Feb/ March. Mucho Fun.

But if your choice was to goet the R to moto with your son, you did the right thing. That is what it is all about! I can't get mine to ride his 70 around the field!
