I'm out of town that entire weekend.

I have been to Stoneyford and it will keep you occupied for many days. Great trails and miles of 'em. It will be crowded that weekend. I recommend reserving the group camp spot as it will fill up fast.

Stoneyford is 35 miles away from the nearest town and it does not have much in the way of restaurants and no lodging. Heading north or south on I-5 will get you to a Motel 6 or similar lodgings.

Driving 8+ hours to ride a crowded place is not sounding so special, maybe this is a bad idea.

Im thinking a trip to Moab or Up to Mr.Smith's "dog Valley" will be more viable....

Stoneyford has plenty of trails according to a buddy of mine. A heavy snow year might prove tough, though. Time and weather will tell. Camping. Maps available, but not a lot around in the way of towns, I believe.

Foresthill is a bit contrived and prety small, although Trail 6 would bring out the best in most intermediate to advanced riders. Fairly heavily used. Like a small Kennedy Meadows. But everything will seem small compared to the SoCal desert. (just bought 5 acres in Johnson Valley area)

The trails around the town of Arnold (western Sierra) are nice.

    What about Clear Creek?

Memorial Day is crowded everywhere. Bring the correct frame of mind.

    Map of Stonyford?

    by mdmasher » Fri Jan 12, 2007 2:26 pm

I tried to scan the map of Stonyford but the post was in code. Stonyford has more rocks and somewhat open trails for the quads in some areas but mainly for bikes. I have been to Stonyford once and it was a blast. I think you could spend a few more days and still not cover it all. Georgetown has about 7-8 hours of fast, hard, tight, kick rear single track riding and its better then the helmet cam video could give you. Two days and 5-7 gal of fuel should make for a great weekend.
Heavy wooded area on most of the trails. I did a 44 mile loop with four others and it took about 4 1/2 hours, Started out easy for 7 miles, did the deep water crossing, and then the expert diamond trail stuff of first gear single track with switch backs that I would hate to even walk. You can get into second gear once in a while. If you have done the trail before you may get third for you fly guys. There are a few spots you better get below your handle bars or you will get knocked off your bike. FUN FUN FUN.
Stop off at the Ranger station a few mile outside of downtown Georgetown for some free maps and spend the three bucks for the colored trail map. You will need it. GPS would also be helpful. If you have a IMS or clark gas tank you should be fine for the day even if you get lost.
There is also a great riding area south of Georgetown. About 75 miles of mountain road away. Elkin Flat, Heavy to bike single track as well. Same stuff as Georgetown
Moonrock is out of Reno and there is a web page.
Sand mountain is 90 miles east of Reno just outside Fallen NV off Highway 50. You can see it on google earth.
100 miles of trails and a 600 plus foot hill climb of sand and dunes and trails out back. I have a pic or two of sand mountain. Even without a paddle tire you can have a blast. Sand Mountain is 40 bucks for a 7 day pass.
PM me your email and I will send over the maps if you would like.

Sweet! Cept Sand Mtn sucks IMOP. You can ride up and down a dune so many times before it becomes boring.

I just rode Stoneyford last weekend. Great ride, 55 mile loop 85% single track through the trees. Never saw the same trail twice. Even had 6"-8" of fresh snow to ride in up at the top. This place is huge, there are many mountains filled with trails. This was only my second time there and I was lost the whole time. If it wasn't for the guys i was with (Orange bikes) I never would have found my truck. This is a really good place to ride and camp. The nearest town is Maxwell (right off hwy 5) Its about 40 minutes away. They don't have much there though. I would think you would have to camp Because I have know idea where the nearest hotel would be. I'm going to Clear Creak this weekend. Last time i was there was about five years ago, so i cant really remember it. Ill check it out more Sunday. All i remember is that it was huge. My all time favorite place to ride though is Pie Pie. The single track there is great. Its off hwy 88 past Jackson. The only problem now is their is about 2 feet of snow there.

Im thinking it's closer to stony for you than it is for me.......???

I cant stand crowded riding areas so I dont think this will happen (at least for me) anyway.

Its freakin perfect up there in May...Mid 70's - 80's. Some times it gets a little windy on this side but it should be great up there. Been through Jackson many a time but never riden there...I bet theres some sweet stuff there.

We So Cal riders owe the Nor Cal group a trip to thier stomping grounds, I was hoping this would be the chance...Georgetown was mentioned, thats just over the hill from you Randy.

I want to ride the very best Northern California has to offer....will the boys step up??

Im sure I am missing somebody, but these are the guys I am counting on.

    Lets ge this going !!!

Hey DD, everyplace where I ride will be crowded on that weekend. Unlike you southern boys, us northern riders don't have a bunch of good riding areas to choose from. I ride at places that are between a 2-3 hour drive each way and basically have four areas to choose from (not counting my riding club) they are Cow Mountain, Carnegie, Metcalf and Hollister Hills. You can bet those will be packed on Memorial weekend, with the exception of Cow Mountain and that's because they are not maintaining it anymore. I'm having knee surgery on March 13th, so hopefully I'll be riding by then. I would like to get in on the ride though.
