30,000 Volts, screw that 110 hurts!!!

The phenomenon of massive static charges on human bodies was first noted by the late professor Robin Beach, of Brooklyn, New York, founder of the scientific detective agency 'Robin Beach Engineers Associated'. One of his very first clients was an Ohio factory-owner whose plant was suddenly plagued with as many as eight small fires a day. Professor Beach's solution was to persuade each of the factory's employees in turn to step on to a metal plate while holding an electrode; at the same time he took reading from an electrostatic volmeter. One of the workers was a young woman recently employed; when she stepped on to the metal plate, the meter showed a tremendous jump. She registered 30,000 volts of electrostatic electricity and a resistance of 500,000 ohms. Professor Beach recommended that she be transferred to some other part of the factory where she would not come into contact with combustible materials. Apparently, the fires immediately went down in frequency.[4]

With all of these valve problems you'd think we'd be at page 8 already.....

first off, that one about the only problem with the x is that she is still alive is a classic.
On the valves i know you said YOUR bike, but iwitnessed this on my mates bike so it`s not a hearsay thing. My mate bought a 450x about 2 months before me, and at 800km it just wouldnt start one day, so he put it in the shop and his inlet valves were stuffed. He was good on maintenance, doing the oil every 2 rides and airfilter every ride. In Australia we are in the middle of our worst ever drought, if you listen to the TV it`s nearly the end of the world, so it is VERY dusty where we ride and it`s like a super fine dust at that. So after replacing his valves, he swapped his twin air filter back to the oem, 2000km later not a drama. On mine i left the oem filter on it and i`ve had no dramas, not just with the valves but anything at all. I think the whole valve issue thing is just an urban legend which Yamaha lovers like to push to try and make themselves feel better after getting beaten by an unreliable 450x. :P

That's true, but they are racing engines and generally used for racing, and depending on how meticulous maintenance is and how much time is spent at the rev limiter there's going to need valve jobs sooner or later.
The big farce is is that if you have a Yamaha,a Suzuki,a Kawasaki,or a KTM guess what ? The same thing, they're gonna need valve work.
The joke is on the Yamaha guys, because they may go longer, but the cost is just crazy high to do the job. Doug

Let's not stray to the Rs. The rumor is about the X. I'm trying to focus here....

Oh what am I thinking... This board could hijack a 747 full of air marshals.

Doesn't the X's valve problems always end up being from a not properly greased airfilter seal, or just not cleaning the filter regularly ??, since everyone i talk to around where i live that has a X hasn't had a problem yet, including myself ! , im thinking its more of a , "in high dust conditions and not sealing the boot well enough" problem , as opposed to a defective production part failure !

Honestly I've only heard of one valve problem and it was a fault of the boot not sealing well. Other than that I haven't heard of any, that's why we are asking. Yamaha guys seem to know all about them, but us Honda guys haven't heard of them.

I think a good source to research the 450x valve problem would be http://www.snopes.com
