I would just be glad that you have the means to atand on your own two feet, instead of making an issue of the less fortunate in this world........are you just pissed that you didnt get your handout??

It's not about being "Blessed". Nobody blessed me.

I wake up everyday and make a decision. Do I stay in bed and hope somebody takes care of me and my family or do I get up and earn some money so I can do it myself.

Nobody is getting up on a soapbox and making fun of the misfortune of others. The e-mail is simply of sharp contrast between the way people think. The message was that people in the cold north take care of themselves because they've chosen to live there. They know what can happen and PREPARE for it. And when it does happen, they pull together and take care of one another. They don't just stand there and complain that the Government has failed them.

The people in this country who don't have their $hit together, don't because they are too damn lazy!!! It's got nothing to do with color either. They're are plenty of people of color in Colorado affected by the blizzards.
People weren't going from car to car looking for stranded white people, they were looking for stranded PEOPLE!

Nobody is making fun of the "less fortunate" people. Some people need help. I'm all about helping people who truly need it. Not about helping people who are too lazy to do for themselves.

I am not looking for a handout. Never have, never will.
I pay enough in taxes to prove that ten times over. However when my tax dollars are given to the "Less fortunate" so they can go to strip clubs or buy Gucci purses, that's when my compassion goes away.

Actually from an e-mail from a friend...

I have those you know.

Of course you know my point is that the thing you posted is floating around these days and the profound observation was not your own.

    I'm with you...

I thought the "This text is from a county emergency manager out in the central part of Colorado after todays snowstorm." would have let people know it wasn't mine, although I would have been proud to write it.

So, what if you could not earn any money?? What if you became injured at work or otherwise, and you became unable to provide, you would not take workmans comp or any other funds??

The levy system was man made and failed, somebody screwed up, and once again you cant compare a snowstorm to a flood like the one that happened in LA, there was no amount of preparing a person could have done..yeah,yeah, dont live there, some people dont have the choices we do.....Thre are less fortunate people out there without the means to build a life like we have.

I agree 100%, but in a situation like Katrina how do you decide who is lazy and who is not?

Do you consider paying for disabilty insurance all your life and then taking if you become disabled a HANDOUT??? I don't. I consider that being prepared.

Yes, and for years they Army Corps of Engineers have been trying to shore it up as the city continues to sink.
It was never designed to withstand the hurricane that hit it. People who live 15' below sea level should be prepared to evacuate at a moments notice. When the call to evacuate was made, how come some people heeded that call while others partied on Bourbon Street? Natural selection...social Darwinism at it's best.

Never having the means? Our tax dollars don't pay for their education??? Or is it that their parents teach them that if you have a bunch of kids while you are thirteen, the government will take care of you. Everybody in this country has a chance to make it. It goes back to that decision every morning when you wake up...

Agent, I know those weren't your words, but having read it, it is clearly an attempt (by the author) at exploiting someone else’s suffering and loss just to be an rear. It's so simple to see.

I guarantee you in every catastrophe, SOMEONE needs help; SOMEONE needs the government; SOMEONE needs, as has been mentioned, a handout. For the original author to state what he did is a joke. How about all of those folks here who loose their home every year to a fire? They always get help, yet they choose to live in the dry, windswept foothills. Every year we hear about the help the government is providing them. When I moved back to California in 1993, I lost my home in the Northridge quake of 94. My insurance company dropped and went bankrupt and I was on my rear. I needed help, yet I was prepared. Thank god FEMA was there to help with the repairs.

My point is: to write something like this only serves one purpose: to denigrate, make fun of and ultimately broaden the gap between the less fortunate and the rest of the country. Believe me, I was the guy yelling at the idiots we all saw on TV doing some incredible things. But NOT EVERYONE in the area was a bad person. Should we blindly say they shouldn't have asked for and received help? Sorry, but I think that's absurd.

Wow, and I NEVER get involved with these kinds of posts. I must need to RIDE! Like DD, I am heading to Anaheim tonight. Hitting Hooters and then a few local bars. Enjoy the race tomorrow!

I definately don't see it that way at all. I see it as a learning experience for all to commend. This is how a community pulls together.

Nobody is saying deny help to those who need it.

That's what insurance is for and when that fails, FEMA should be there to help. The Government should be a safety net, not the rigging!! The insurance is the rigging, if it fails, then they should step in.

I see it differently. I see it as a "We should all learn from what goes right as well as what goes wrong".
People in New Orleans need to see this stuff and ask themselves "Why didn't we rise to the occasion like they did?"

Nobody is saying that there aren't people who need help from time to time. And nobody is saying that needy people shouldn't be given the help they need. That's absurd.

But should we blindly give out cash to all who can stand in line???

    That's really absurd...

Now go to your race and have fun.

DD's got the Katrina card and he's buying rounds at Hooter's!!
