I noticed that too with my X when I out in the Stage 2, It felt like a 450R engine as far as it sounded and felt .
Looking back, that was the best single mod I did with my X.
Hey, your decompressor couldn't have been affected by the HotCams install, that's not what HotCams said ! :D
One of our "intellectualizing" critics decided that since that's what HotCams said that then the matter had been "put to rest". He solicited advise here , then over at TT asked the same thing and so much as called us ignorant fools who didn't know what we were doing.
Funny, imagine listening to people who had done the job,and more than once.
Even funnier, I haven't heard any tales of success or any tales period on his Im sure wildly successful install.
Nice job on yours ! Doug

Come on Doug. That's the best you can do? Maybe I am too immature to be here. I would have thrown up the big "told ya so" !

    How's this.......WE TOLD YOU SO!!!!....DUMBA$$!! 8)

    Did install (finally) tonight.
Checked the valve clearences prior to taking the cam out and they were perfect. Swapped the cam and found inlet and exhaust were as before but the Decomp at the standard setting visibly looked WAY too loose. Went in to 0.022 from the standard 0.025 as per xman and Doug's recommendation, pressed the starter button and BAM, 2 revolutions of the crank and it fired up!
I immediately noticed that the bike sounded different, was much keener to rev and the revs seemed to pick up and fall off MUCH quicker.
Took it up the road and could immediately feel the effect. I will be riding some good trails over the weekend and will give you an update then.
Many thanks to all for the help..

So which cam did you wind up with?

hmmmm Sounds like I might order a stage 2 cam while the doc said I can't ride for at least a month(knee/shoulder injury) so I have it torn apart to adjust the exhaust valves I might just have to go on Ebay and order a Stage 2 cam.. Is there any additional parts I need? I have the hotcams shim kit on order..

Do yourself a favor and order it from Ken. That way you KNOW what you are going to get.

Ken, through his personal service has saved me a hell of a lot of money, and a whole lot of other people on this site as well.
YOT have free shipping over 150 bucks ?
Hey, it's your money ,but the mentality of always going with the lowest bidder ,disregarding other benefits, has lead to the Wal-Mar infestation of our country. Doug

If the decompressor gap were way too much, the poor little starter motor would probably have a hard time turning the engine over.

On the low side, the decompressor seems to work fine. .022" is not enough to make a difference, in my opinion. While trying to remedy a starter motor problem, I ran mine well below .022" and had no problem. I've heard of others who tried .015" or below and it seemed to work.

I'm not saying it should be set low. I'm just saying I don't think it has to be that exact. It should not effect how the motor runs once started, as it should be disengaged at that point.

Damn I'm an idiot I think I set mine around .014 I think that's a bit tight!!!! that's why my bike won't start

Ignore the owners maual compression release clearance spec.
Back out the decompressor adjustment screw an 8th turn at a time until the starter won't turn over the motor, instead you will here a "clank".
Then turn the screw in an 8th at a time until the starter will turn over the motor, and you're done.
If uou use the manuals clearance specified you will be down about 10% on compression, not a good thing.
Both myself and SIV went through this.

This method worked for SIV and me both, we've both done our installs as well as for others. Doug

Thanks so much Doug I appreciate it I'm going to readjust when I get home tonight and I think it should be good then=

Quick question what the proper way to do a compression test on the bike I haven't done one in about 10yrs or so=)...

    Drain float bowl-
    Petcock off-
    Full throttle-
Crank it with the e-start until the needle on the guage stops moving,-you should get around 58psi.
If you have 58psi and you starter will turn the engine over, you've got it right.
Let me know how it goes for you, you'll love that cam !
Check your plug since you'll have it out, if it's black and sooty lose the 48 and go back to a 45.
My X ran razor sharp even with temps in the 40's and 50's even with a 162/45/JD red middle clip/TwinAir PowerFlow/airbox top and sides open, fuel screw adjustments only.
Good luck, let us know how it's goin'. Doug
