SOS - 2009 CRF450R stupid hard to start

    by Dales300exc » Tue Aug 10, 2021 2:21 am

Hey all! I am reaching out from Australia for any help I can find! I have scoured pretty much every thread I can find on starting issues with these bad boys and I have achieved nothing haha. Grab a beer a settle in for a bit of a story!

Bought a blown up 2009 CRF450R against my better judgement a few months ago as a project, it had a failed big end bearing and had locked up. The bike then sat for 6 or so years in his shed before I was lucky enough to get a message from him 🤣.

So I rebuilt the engine, new crank, all bearings, piston, clutch basket, basically anything it needed.

Rebuilt dam near everything else on it, was trashed.

Get it back together and try and start it. Couldn't get it going. Cracked it and went home. Gave it a week and calmed down. Came back to it. Checked most of the loom etc. Connected 12v to it through condensor/capacitor plug. Started. Runs sweet etc etc.

Anyway, almost cant start it cold, takes 20-30 kicks and seems like its flooding, so have to wait in between kicks. Then might get a pop. Then wait and a good kick and it will seem to go. But its definitely not right.

Has a new fuel pump, new injector, new spark plug.
Tried a second hand stator, reg, and a new condensor/capacitor. No change. It had a stealhy heavy flywheel, clutching at straws changed it back to original incase magnets were weak. No change.

Have gone through pretty much the whole loom, its driving me bonkers. Cleaned plugs, main earths, etc.

Once you get it running its fine. Can let it sit for 10 mins and it will start first/second kick. Runs like a top. Good power etc. Valves were shimmed, the head wasn't touched during the rebuild but considering it starts first kick with a battery connected it says to me its not mechanical.

If anyone can help at all, that would be great because right now im over invested in a bike I can't even sell 🤣.

    Thanks all. Be safe!

Also checked current draw of injector and fuel pump. Alone with fuel pressure while kicking and 12v. They were in spec but changed anyway and no difference in starting.

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

It still could be the valves , if there is minimal or low compression the bike will run but be a bear to start .... if you have or can borrow a compression gauge , check it with the throttle fully open , and kick till the gauge stops moving , (usually 5 or so kicks), you should have about 57 psi. , if it is lower than that , I would think that is the issue , especially if you have already eliminated the fuel system and electrical .(unless the spark plug cap resistor is bad) but if the compression is low , then I would say either rings , or valves

Hopefully Leardriver will chime in as he is the resident fuel expert around here , so maybe there is something he knows that might also cause the symptoms :-k

I dont have a compression tester but I do have a leak down tester and it was perfect.

Plus compression doesn't change if I hook up a battery! Its got to be a little electrical gremil.or something.

I did measure the resistance of the plug cap but I had nothing to compare it to I couldnt find anything in the manual or googling 🤷.

Appreciate the reply! I am open to anything at this point haha.

Are you getting any codes on the MAP light once it does start ??

Here is the testing info you need for the electrical from my Service Manual

    Nah no faults on light.

I have the service manual and have checked everything I can, some things multiple times haha. Its so bizarre. Takes like 10 mins of kicking and waiting, then you can get it going. Once it has run, starts first/second kick no problems.

I have a new coil coming for peace of mind. But doubt it will do anything. Wish there was a simple solution haha.

So seeing as I can't go for a ride, I thought id bust out the meter again.

Measure at the hot wire voltage while kicking on the coil, first half a dozen kicks, only peaking at 3.5 is volts. Then something changes and it shot up to 8 volts. At this point I can get a pop out of the exhaust and with a little patience get the bike running.

When you are kicking it over, until you can physically smell fuel, it wont pop or do anything. Once you get the wiff of fuel, then you can wait a minute and generally once you get a pop out the exhaust, it isnt long until its running.

Were these bikes prone to ecu failures?
