2004 CRF230F Throttle Problem

Alright so a few months ago i got into a bad accident and it bent one side of the handle bars completely in. Fast forward to today i just replaced the handle bars and noticed a couple more things while working on it.. my brake lever snapped off which is fine $10 fix. When i put everything on the handle bars back in place I said why not try to start it. Wouldn't really give so I added gas (yes i know should have drained the old gas first). It sounded stronger after i added the gas, but I noticed when I was trying to open the throttle a bit and rev it see how it sounded it died out. Even at a slight turn on the throttle it would die out. I've seen a few people say main pilot jet, air filter, change ur oil, I was going to do this anyway, but want to know for sure really where the problem would lie. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

I would conclude it is a clogged Pilot Jet , you mentioned not draining the gas and it sitting for a few months , that is all it takes for Ethanol gas to clog up the jets and even internal passages .... what I would do is remove the carb , and remove the bowl , I am willing to guess you will find a green coating in the bowl , that is the Ethanol , and means the carb needs the complete cleaning , and I would personally just replace the Pilot Jet , they are inexpensive and will eliminate the worry of if you got the old jet clean or not ..... remove any rubber items before cleaning with any carb cleaner or carb dip ... it will eat any rubber ..... make sure to remove the fuel screw , it will have a spring , flat washer , and a O-Ring , in that order , the O-Ring sometimes gets stuck down in there when removing the screw , so you need a pick or small tool to remove it before cleaning

Before you put everything back together , drain the tank , and put in FRESH gas , if the bike is going to sit for more than 1 or 2 months , DRAIN the tank , and either run the bike till it runs out of gas , or drain the carb as well ...

Might be worth removing the petcock and giving the tank a flush and see if the filter screen is still intact.
Flush the fuel line before putting it on carb when reinstalling.

Thank you for the tips! I spent all day taking it apart and inspecting it.. inside it wasn't green but after cleaning it or so i thought i put it all back together and then it wouldn't even start then I saw it was leaking from the carb itself so, I ordered a rebuild kit (including jets and float bowl, and a new gasket (the gasket was very worn down). So, I hope that solves the problem. Other than that I dont know what else it could be.. I replaced my air filter and everything was in place there didnt look bad at all. Think the rebuild kit will work?

The reason the carb is overflowing is there is probably a bit of gunk in the needle and seat.
This is why we are suppose to drain our float bowls when storing our bikes.

Either that or the float is catching which can happen after you have a carb apart but didn't notice when reassembling.

Make sure your breather line are free of mud etc.

What do you mean by the float catching? But i should have the rebuild kit by the end of this week so, I'll let you know how it goes!

If the float has moved a little or tab got bent whilst apart sometimes they can catch on the bowl.

I believe you will find some gunk or grit in the needle and seat assembly pull it apart flush it out and blow through.

Reassemble turn float bowl upside down and see if you can blow in the fuel inlet. It should be sealing , if you lift the float you should be able to blow through.

Alright so I have rebuilt the carb and put it back together. I found when I tried to start it.. it wasn't leaking like it was before which is good. And it doesnt cut when i try to give it throttle, but it still wont idle at all/really start. So, my next bet is battery and change the spark plug? Im not quite sure you guys let me know.

Maddie,
Did you take the fuel screw out and blast through the passage way?
Was the idle jet clean or did you use a new one?
You may have to adjust the fuel screw to get it to idle smoothly as well.
A fresh spark plug never goes astray.

If the battery can start the bike it is probably ok for now.
Give it a good charge though.

Yes I put in an entirely new kit. I will try to adjust it to see if that'll help. After that not too sure what else it can be. Im sure the spark plug needs to be changed, but after that i am out of ideas :/

Try one thing at a time or you won't know what fixed it.
A wise saying is the a service fixes most car or bike ills 85% of the time, is pretty true.

I would do the plug before adjusting anything else.

What size idle jet came out and what size went back in?

I’m pretty sure the same size went in as the size that came out i have not fiddled with the fuel screw as i cant turn it to the left or right at all so i’m not gonna play with that but i will change the spark plug next right now i gotta drain the gas cause i don’t want the same thing happening. But yeah can’t even turn that fuel screw. The idle on the other hand is completely new just to say that again. So everyone knows what has been updated.

Hi Maddie,
Is the fuel screw stuck? Or just can't get to it?
Should be a flat blade screwdriver, is that the case.

Was there an o ring in the kit for the idle screw?

If it is stuck there maybe corrosion in the passageway that needs cleaning.
Provided someone hasn't glued it in ages ago
