Milky tranny and engine oil after river fall

    Hi guys,

I had a fall in a small river and my 2011 CRF250X was submerged in water for about 30 seconds before I managed to pull it up. I had a hard time starting the bike, took about an hour and then I just rode it back to the car (25min riding time)

After 2 days I decided to check oil to see its condition. It was creamy / milky so I realised there was water inside. I also checked gearbox oil which is a separate system and that was milky too. I changed both oils and engine filter 3 times in order to flush the water out, each time starting the engine. After idling it for about 10 mins the oil seem to be normal and not milky.

Coolant is ok, compression and power ok - so I dont think there a head gasket or water pump leak.

My guess is that water went in the engine through the engine and transmission vent. Is that possible?

Is there any other action I need to do? Should I worry that this will rust the internals of the engine?

To answer your question - Yes, very likely if the vent points were below the water level. You did the correct procedure. Probably did not need to do the changes three times but it can not hurt to be thorough.
You should have also checked the air box and cleaned the air filter. Even draining the carb float bowl is not a bad idea to make sure all water is gone.
