    Idle problem

    by CTriders58 » Fri Feb 12, 2021 8:30 pm

I have a 2014 CRF250L, and every time I drop the bike down, even gently, it has problems staying at idle without the engine dying when I restart it. I have to keep the throttle open mid range for at least 5-10 minutes while in neutral so that it stays idling without dying when I release the throttle.
I also noticed the smell of gas when the bike is down. It almost seems as if it gets flooded but does that make sense if it is fuel injected?
I also have a 2013 CRF 250L and never have this problem.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

Just a guess - But I suspect you have a ROV [ roll over valve ] and or a fuel vapor canister [ for emissions ] that is becoming full of fuel when you have the bike on it's side. That can cause the bike to run erratic until the fuel in either of those points evaporates.

    Hi Neil,
Thanks for your feedback. Do you know of a way to solve the problem? While it makes sense, it seems odd the bike stops working properly every time it is dropped or is leaning sideways, considering it is an off road bike.

IF - it's an ROV that is causing it, that can be removed. many people remove them as they tend to get gunked up and cause problems. It will be inline on a vent tube off the tank. That is if your bike has one. I think every bike sold that is considered road worthy has to have an ROV per federal regulations.

IF - It's a fuel vapor canister, again a fed regulation on most bikes now days that are road worthy that can also be removed. It is purely a canister that catches raw fuel from tip overs and over filling the tank. Fed's saving the planet and all that crap. Many people remove them. I don't know your particular machine so these are jsut some items to look into.

Hope that gives you something to work with. Good luck. Have you tried to ask your Honda shop? They may be able to give some insight.

Thanks again for your input. I will check both options and that will hopefully solve the problem.
I spoke to a couple Honda shops and they don’t know what it could be. They suggested to bring it in which I’ll do if I can’t figure it out
