    05 CRF250R flywheel weight

    by 4gottenman » Sun Aug 30, 2020 4:23 pm

Does anyone have any tips on how to make my flywheel heavier? I was really wanting to add a steahly or a trail tech flywheel weight but they don’t appear to make them anymore. Are there any heavier flywheel’s that I can swap in that would do the trick possibly? I’m just trying to keep it from stalling at slower speeds while trail riding. Thanks!

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

Yea unfortunately , they have all discontinued the weights and heavy flywheels for the older models , I guess they figure if someone was going to add one , they would have done it before all the new models have been added

With that said ..... About the only other way is to buy a Steel Clutch Basket , it will give some rotational mass , which is basically what the weight does , though the basket is not as drastic a change , it will "help" ...... other than that , you can also go the route of the Rekluse ... though I personally do not like them , they will help with stalling ....... depending on how tight of trails you are riding , you could also maybe gear down a tooth or so , for a example , my 450X does not have any flywheel weight , but I did put a HotCams Stage 1 (all bottom and mid power which is better for trails) and went from a 13/51 , to a 13/52 and it made a huge difference when it came to lugging the bike .... , on my 02 450R I do have a flywheel weight , and when trail riding it , I run a 13/52 , and that helps it a bunck , then I just swap gearing to 13/48 and track ride it .... , though they are both 450's , the principal is the same , so that is also a couple options to explore ....... is maybe a cam swap and/or gearing .....

As far as I know , the 250's did not have much variance thru the years (the X has a heavier flywheel , but I do not think it will fit the R , due to case clearance issues ) , but with R flywheels a different year won't really do much , if anything at all as far as I know , the R is not the best trail bike , the X is just better suited and that is why it was made to be a trail bike , but it is not a R , so don't plan on going to the track with it , and the R would already have a lighter flywheel from the start than the X would , so you are fighting a uphill battle from the start ......

Basically with a older model , it is going to be tough to find a weight or heavy flywheel , unless you stumble across one on EBay .....

Since you are stalling I assume they are slow speed trails.
If that is the case I would definitely go up a tooth or two at the back.

The worse thing could be you are up a gear, which can only be easier on the gearbox.

Thanks for all the responses! My brother gave me some bad advise when picking a dirt bike. He recommended I get a MX bike because they can do both track and trails. He was obviously very wrong. So now I’m trying to make this one work better for now while I try to find an old XR or something like it.

I would not rail on your brother so quickly. I rode single track with guys that one rode a CR500 and the other a CRF450R and it was tight hard single track. Give it some time and you will find you will adapt. As Jim said watch ebay for a fly wheel weight and one will come up.

You CAN ride a MX bike on trails as Neil mentioned , that is not the issue , the issue is the more trail friendly you make the bike , makes it less track friendly , you will always have to compromise , that is where a trail specific bike shines , no compromise , but like me , then you end up with 2 bikes ... however when I trail ride with friends that do not have a bike , or a trail bike specifically , I let them ride my X and I ride my R , the only downside is no button on my R , for me it makes it a bit of a struggle to start it because I have bad hips (among other things) , but other than that , I don't really change much to go from track to trail , I can ride with the 13/48 gearing I currently have and not stall much , if at all ....but as mentioned , I do have a flywheel weight on my R .... but I am confident enough in my riding skill that I can ride it stock with no issues .... but , it will never be a great trail bike .... that is why I have a X .....
