150R and 150F oil change question

    by Dunerking » Sun May 24, 2020 3:16 pm

Great site here! I’ve put in many hours of reading and informing myself. Sorry for this question as it’s probably been asked before,I just couldn’t find it.
I own a 09 CRF150RB(11 year old son)and 09 CRF150F(14 year old daughter) and going to do the motor and trans oil service and would prefer to buy just one type of oil to use in both bikes. Which of the HP4 oils can I use in both bikes? I was also going to use the HP Trans oil.
Also I was going to get new sets of tires for both bikes, and was considering getting the Dunlop MX53 front and rear tires for both bikes. We primarily ride in the So.Cal deserts(Dove Springs,Cal City, etc). Thanks for any and all help and info/tips! Happy Memorial weekend!

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

You can run either the Synthetic or Petroleum , the choice is yours and either will work fine , the Synthetic allows you to go longer between changes , so that is a plus , as far as Tranny oil , if the specs of it fall within what the manual says is a requirement , it should be fine for both , what you are looking for is JASO and MA on the label ,,, if it says it meets those standards it is most likely fine to run ...

As far as tires go , they are kind of subjective , my personal opinion is Dunlops seem to wear faster than other brands , at least with big bikes they do , as soon as they lose the new edge , they seem not go grab well , and get worse as the tire wears , at least that has been my experience , I have had good luck with Bridgestones and Michelins as far as longevity and decent traction (I run Battlecross X30's for hardpack and dry , I run Michelins Starcross 5 Soft for loamy deep wetter conditions , but never for hardpack or dry , but riding hardpack which is I guess what you will be mostly in , so you want a hard pack tire , the issue is , the harder the tire compound , the less traction , so if traction is a concern , you might need a medium compound to get the bite , at the sacrifice of a little longevity compared to a hardpack tire compound

You might even consider IRC , they are usually great desert tires and last forever and usually less expensive than most other brands ....

Thanks for the very helpful/informative reply! I’d rather go the synthetic oil route... I noticed Honda offers the HP oils in different styles,HP4M,HP4S,and standard HP4. Do you know which of those 3 would work for both the 150R and 150F?
Yes most of the areas we ride are harder terrain mixed with some rocks. One of our riding areas is sandy, softer terrain but the kids prefer the harder pack terrain. Thanks again!

JimDirt...thank you for the link! I’m just wanting keep it as simple as possible with one type of motor and trans oil. I’m sure Honda HP has a type of oil that will cover both bikes. Thanks again! Cheers 🍻
