    Bad Regulator / Rectifier

    by JED50x » Fri Feb 21, 2020 8:07 pm

Hi y’all. Need some electrical help if anybody has it. Bike is a new to me 2006 450x. Battery was dead when I bought it so installed a new lithium ion battery. The bike is hard to start and won’t idle with the choke in. (I suspect carb needs cleaning and maybe pilot jet is clogged.) And the new battery has gone dead on me a couple of times. It will take a full charge on the battery tender, though. With the bike off it measures 13.4 V, and with the bike on idle and also under revs it stays at 13.4 V. Is that an indicator that the regulator / rectifier is bad?

    Thanks!

Yes, from what you described that sounds like a output issue. As the RPM's rise so should the voltage being delivered to the battery. Somewhere in the 13.4V at idle up to probably 14.5 volts above 3-4K RPM is a ball park.
If you have a manual you should be able to check the ohm's resistance of the stator winding and what the actual voltages out of the regulator. I do not recall the values. Simple things first - Something became unplugged during the valve work or the bikes fall over? Pinched or cut wires?
Also, Lithium batteries require a different charger than the standard lead acid batteries. Be careful you don't smoke that new battery.

Curious what you find - These bikes have a very robust electrical system I would be surprised if the R/R or stator are bad. But, things happen.

Thanks. That at least makes me feel better about the possibilities. I will start checking, Meantime, yes, I have a charger intended for lithium ion batteries so I think I’m good.
