    Screw heads rounded out

    by kiko » Sun Dec 17, 2017 4:53 am

Just picked up a used CRF230F and I wanted to check the carb needle clip position. The previous owner had rounded out the phillips head lock screw on the lever arm and also both screws on the carb piston. Outside of drilling out the screws can anyone advise the safest method to extract the screws without damage. Very small screws something like 2.5 or 3.0 mm.

Dremel tool for new cut in head, Kroil soak, heat from soldering iron?? What is my best option?

Hello, I do not know what screws you are describing by "carb piston". But one recommendation would be if possible, cut a slot across the remaining screw head and use a standard straight screw driver. Another option is sometimes it's possible to get a needle nose vise grip on to the screw head. If possible a small chisel used on the head of the screw driven in the CCW direction can break then fastener loose and heat from a heat gun or butane torch [with caution] or penetrating oil can also help.
Pic's always help but those are a few quick ideas for you. If those are not feasible then it gets more complicated.

Hope one of those work for you.

I meant throttle slide, (here we use the word piston because it is shape like a piston.) I am not sure if we have the same carb here in Mexico as the US. The only markings on the carb are the letters Keihin PD on the right side just about the bowl. It is similar in design to the carb on my XR650R. Pilot is a 42 and main is a 102. At 5300 ft in tropical climate I plan to change that to a 45 pj and 110 mj. I would like to see the needle though to confirm what I have.

It is 2009 model CRF230F but the versions sold in Mexico and South America usually have some tweaks and changes to the motors.

    I know the screws.
They are very soft metal screws always in to tight.
Heat and vice grips may work.
There are some screw extractors that look like a torx head bit. Drill head of screw and tap them in an unwind with a socket on the hex end.
If you get them out replace with allen head bolts.

Thanks for the replies, can anyone tell me if the dealer is the only go to source for carb parts for this model? I think the carb is a PD9CA. I have looked at Sudco, Carbwarehouse, and JetsR Us but I only see common parts like jets, o-rings and rebuild kits.

I thought I may damage the slide when trying to remove the screws and then I am screwed. Finding parts here in Mexico is near to impossible so I will need to import something from the US. I may just order a used carb for parts off of fleabay. That would be cheaper than going to the dealer here for parts.

After changing the pilot to a 45 and the main to 110 I may just leave the needle alone. The moto is running extremely well. Took it out yesterday for the first good ride of about 150 km off road in the mountains, rocky, muddy, and steep. Performed like a champ. On the goat trails around here I can ride this bike faster than my previous KLX or XR650R.
