Split cases and part fell out?

    by jessemll » Wed May 04, 2016 5:46 am

I split open the case on a 2007 crf450r to fix a problem with 5th gear. When I was opening the case a pin dowel 1cm long and 1cm wide fell out. I looked everywhere for where it would have come from and checked all the parts diagrams and still can't find a place for it. All the dowel pins on the diagrams are accounted for. It has a marking of a A and is slit but I'm not sure if it's meant to be split or is broken. Anyone know what it is and where it goes. A part number for reference would be great!!

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

To post the actual picture using Photobucket , use the IMG link , (i just did it with yours)
    Image

That looks like a bent Case Dowel to me , triple check to make sure its not from where the cylinder or head goes on instead of the case halves , but its definitely a dowel , i can't imagine it floating around in the transmission , there is not enough room in there for it not to be destroyed or to have not bound up on something

Thanks for the help with the image!!
I will check again to see if it's a dowel but I am 99% sure it's not. According to the parts diagrams I have all the dowels are accounted for, and resting in there designated spots. The fact that the part is split like that worries me a little. when I split case the only damage I saw was on the counter shaft 5th gear "dogs", which had a lot of rounding. I attribute that to the reason I couldn't get 5th gear to engage, which was the reason for splitting the case in the first place. I was hoping that the A marking on the part would tell someone that works on these bikes all the time exactly what it is and where it goes.

With the view in that image , it looks like a dowel , maybe your seeing something i am missing in the image , but it looks like a dowel to me , but from that view i can't see the thickness , or any other distinguishable features , as far as the Dog goes , i would also closely view and straight edge the shift fork and shift drum , as usually either or both "could" be the main culprit for causing any other part to wear abnormally , i would imagine the fork is bent , even the slightest bend can cause it to not push the gear in all the way (causing the rounding your referring to) or binding , and causing the abnormal wear

Perhaps you could post a few more images of the "dowel" with different angle views , maybe with a tape measure next to it for size reference , to better identify the part

The part is 1 cm x 1 cm.
I think I will take the transmission into the local shop to see about the forks they look good to me but I'm no expert. I want this thing fixed so I can ride!!

Check the shift drum as well as the forks , either or both could cause the issue

And that still looks like a head/cylinder/case dowel

I figured out the part placement. It goes on one end of the drum. no part number just comes with the drum. I was to busy last weekend to get into the local shop to have them look and my forks and drum but hopefully this weekend. Ended up ordering the wrong gears anyway so wouldnt be able to put the bike back together until Babbitts ships me the right gears. What a pain this has become. thanks for the help!!
