    Crf250r 2010 high pitched noise

    by worstinfinland » Sun Mar 30, 2014 10:22 am

    Hey.

I got a 133 hours ridden -10 crf250r that is making a high pitched noise around the right side of the engine. I don't think its a mechanical clicking sound, more like a washer under a loose bolt moving around. Haven't found any loose bolts yet..
Haven't opened anything from it yet, (Bought it from a guy who is trustworthy and took care of it.) only changed oil and filter on 128hours. I think it started to make the noise around 130, which is around the time I checked transmission oil level, none came out from the hole until I added around 60ml. Then I found out the manual says 690ml (iirc), but the case says 750ml...
I also doubt the valves are out of spec, it starts on the first kick cold (15 celsius garage, 0 celsius outside), needs a few kicks without the fast idle knob when hot, though.

I also remember reading that there is a whining sound if there isn't enough transmission oil..
    Any ideas?

Does the noise change when you pull in the clutch, or change when in gear vs. not?

Could be anything. Take a wood dowel and put one end on your ear and the other in various spots on the engine and transmission. You may get lucky and pin point something.

If you had not mentioned the low oil I would have suggested you start with the water pump, but if you did heat it up too much it could be a bearing pretty much anywhere.

Take a listen and see if you can isolate the sound. Also pull the clutch and see if you have warped the metal plates - I was told that heavily warped plates will make noise, but I have no idea what it would sound like.

Also, drain the trans fluid into something that will allow you to inspect the fluid. Stick a magnet in it and see if you are pulling out metal.

I doubt it's a bearing. I'm not a fast rider it's winter here and I've been driving around negative degree celsius with front wheel throwing snow at the engine. So most likely not overheated.
I think it just may come from the pump..
Also I can't check the transmission oil until next weekend.
Edit: Also the noise doesn't change. At all, I think, a slight twist of throttle and you can't hear it anymore.

Check the steering stem nut. That washer will transmit noise sounding like it is coming from the engine. Took me several rides to figure it out.

The one right under the handle bar on the middle?
It did go loose a few times until I secured it completely and I made sure it wasn't that.
Unless you mean another bolt there.

Thanks for the input, though. :-)
