    Urgent Help please! 2005 Honda CRF 250R starting issue

    by johnovan » Fri Feb 07, 2014 5:44 am

    Hello all i'm new to the forum read a few stuff on the auto decompression but i still don't understand clearly how to solve my problem. Ok I had a motorcycle mechanic check my 2005 honda crf 250r because it would take forever to kickstart like 30 - 40 kicks he took the head off and told me that the valves were dirty and not closing all the way and leaking compression. he cleaned them up and reassembled the head back on the motorcycle after doing this the kick start got very very very hard to kick i can stand on it as if i'm standing on the peg and it wouldn't go down. after a few shrugs it does and the motorcycle starts right away once i can a good momentum during the kick. can anyone help me solve this problem?

    Find a new mechanic :shock:

    Looks like the decomp cam got messed up somehow.

    Almost impossible to tell without looking at it. Once someone elses hands have been in there, ther's no knowing, for sure, what was done. One way or the other, the 'cam lobe' that releases compression at start speeds is not extending to touch the exhauls valve during the compression stroke. Could be it was disassembled and re-assembled incorrectly, or somethings bunged up.

    Maybe some more experienced riders will pipe up with ideas.

    do you think if the timing is off this would cause that problem?

    Look at this post;

    A really good writeup on a mod for the decomp setup, but for your case a really good visual of what's in there. I doubt, if it were out of time, it would run at all, or if it did, would run very poorly. As the decomp 'cam lobe' is actually part of the one camshaft we have, that would mean if the decomp were not timed correctly, nor would the camshaft at all. I may be way off, but if this were even a little bit off, you would know it in how it ran. Again, if it ran at all. More likely something about the decomp mechanism in the cam was not assembled correctly.

    One more note, if the spring were not re-installed on assembly, I believe that might cause the issue you are having.

    It could simply be the decomp lever was not adjusted properly. It only take a few thousands of an inch difference either way to have troublesome starting.

    It starts,it runs,it gets to where all CRFs can get to without the valve or valve plate dramas

    I took off the engine cover n notice that the weight decomp is aready shaved and isn't even touching the exhaust at all I think that is the problem I will replace it and see if that solve the problem

    Not sure which lever you are talking about, is there an adjustment?

    That's what I thought, looks like a simple assembly mistake then. Also, I'm not sure, but I think if the spring was forgotten it probably won't ever decomp.
