    2012 crf250r

    Hi all,

I was very disappointed today when I went to change the air filter on my brand new (7 hours old) 2012 crf250r today only to find a great deal of Sand and grit behind the filter and down into the fuel injection inlet. There is also foreign oil (engine oil I expect in the air filter). I have been changing the filter after every ride and on the last change I overruled it a little bit.

However it looks like the cause of this problem may have been factory related as I was removing the air box I found the clamp that connects to the fuel injection was quite loose and there is a lot of dirt between the airboot lip and injection inlet.

So now I imagine my engine is dusted and the oil in the filter is blowby so ill be up for rings valves and either a home or a barrel on a brand new bike.. Great! :(. I just thought I would post to make people aware if this hopefully rare problem and to see if anyone else had suffered anything similar. I am not totally writing off dirt getting through the filter but it was a new hiflo filter and it was very heavily oiled and sealed properly with grease around the rim. I don't want to rebuild the bike for this problem to occur again.

    Cheers
    Alex

Alex...sorry to hear about this. Have you discussed this with your purchasing dealer?

I spoke to the service manager yesterday and he basically said "too bad" because I didn't take it back for a two hour service. I highly doubt the clamp in question would be checked during this service anyhow as the only way to get at the head of the bolt was too completely remove the rear shock along with the subframe, air box and exhaust obviously.

I am taking it bak this afternoon to speak to the guy who sold me the bike to see if they can offer any help at all.

Bike is in at the workshop at the moment and awaiting a response from Honda. Before even looking at the bike the service dept called through to Honda to see what they could do so at the moment I am nervously awaiting the verdict will let you know the outcome.

the stated policy is "no warranty". however, in practice honda has been known to go above and beyond when it is clear there was a defect or an assembly issue. a clear and obvious case needs to be made with calm assertiveness. a good dealer with this ability to be determined with honda has been known to make it happen. fortunately, these issues are rare. hoping for the best for you.

I heard back from Honda yesterday and they have declared that "it is not possible for air to be sucked through the join in between the airboot and the throttle body" and have said I "must have fitted the airfilter wrong."

Not happy with this response I have written a detailed email and report of all my findings (nearly 2000 words) to Honda here in Australia and I hope it finds it's way to the appropriate representative.
