    Need help: bike died mid-ride

    by TexasUSA » Mon Jul 01, 2013 9:21 am

I took my 04 crf250x out for a ride this weekend on the hottest day we have had this summer. 100+ degrees. About an hour into the ride, the bike just died. It felt like I had accidentally hit the kill switch. I tried to fire it back up and it wouldn't turn over(it has electric start). The trails are very rocky so I checked to see if anything like the distributed had jolted loose. Nothing. After about 5 minutes I tried again and it fired right up.

I headed back towards the car and it died again after about 10 minutes of running smoothly. I waited a few minutes and had no luck restarting. I loaded up and headed home. When I got home 30 mins later it fired right up again.

It's full of coolant. The gas cap is breathing normally. The engine isn't seized up.

Has anyone seen this before? Thoughts?

I have the Clymer and am confident I can handle minor repairs, but I don't want to attempt anything that could make it worse.

CDI seems to be where I keep going back to. I'm going to try to test it

Make sure you are Loosing Spark, if So, need to get it Hot, then Check Cdi Output, Pick up, or the Box.

aaaaaaaand I'm an idiot. I pulled the tank off to check the fuel flow and realized that if I had switched to reserve, I would have been good to go. Just cause you can see gas in the tank doesn't mean you don't need to go to reserve.....

Upside is that it's not serious. Downside is that I'm a moron.

    Thanks for the help.

You won't be the last to do it.

MX guys don't have reserve because they don'y trust to get the tap the right way.
