    A possible cam issue

    by Nstyle » Sun Mar 10, 2013 5:20 pm

Hey everyone well i just got finished tearing my 250r down today to throw a piston in it. Everything went well except when taking the cam out the lobes were facing forward towards the exhaust. It was at top dead center and everything was lined up. My stupid mistake was a concern because the exhuast valves seemd to have been open when i pulled the cam out then the valves closed. Is this going to be a problem when reinstalling? :?:

not a problem. just make sure when installing the cam the lobes are facing the rear (intake) when setting the timing.

For both of you...you mentioned that the cam lobes were pointed forward but also stated the engine was at TDC. Not sure if I am missing something but it sounds like the engine couldn't be at TDC if the cams were pointed forward. So could be me but I wanted to jump in just incase there is a mistake here so you don't mess up the motor. So a few questions and feel free to tell me to buzz off if I jumped the gun...just trying to help.
It is possible to think you are at TDC but be 180 degrees out if you don't use the reference lines on the cam gear AND the pointer in the lower end engine case. If you just use the cam gear and the two reference lines, optically lined up with the head deck you may be in trouble. If you are 180 out and you simply roll the cam over you will then be 180 degrees out of phase with the crank and will wreck some stuff. So please clarify and again if I missed something my bad. Matt

No man i really apprciate the concern but the marks were ligned up on the crank and cam. There are two times that the piston is at tdc. When the intake lobes are facing back and when there facing forward. The engines fine. I already have it running again:D

Ha! Got it. It was on the exhaust storke...piston TDC. Funny I didn't see your other post until after. Sounds like you were able to salvage the machine and its running good I hope.
Loving my Honda's. Well worth the premium paid because they are assembled in such a logical fashion. I am on my third Honda Ridgeline as well and its the same thing. High build quality and super easy to work on.
Good stuff. Was just up the Hudson River a few weeks back and noticed the snow on the ground was really clearing up. Hopefully you will be riding soon. Up in Maine we are getting another foot as we speak.....need to move. Matt
