    Timing for cam chain replacement

    by dude27 » Mon Jan 21, 2013 2:53 pm

I have a 2008 crf250R and am in the process of rebuilding the top end. What is the recommended timing for changing the cam chain? Also, i heard that you need a special tool (flywheel puller) for this? Thanks for any advice.

install the cam as per the service manual and the timing will be set correctly. you can also refer to our how-to on valve check and adjust:

if you are replacing the cam chain you will need to remove the flywheel and this is the correct tool for the job:

Use the puller for sure - will make a very spooky 'bang' the first time you break the flywheel loose. It's normal to go change your shorts after.

Make sure you do not damage the end of the crank (tool protects it during removal) or drop the alignment key. You will also need to have something to hold the flywheel when putting it back on. I use a piece of bicycle tube wrapped around the flywheel with a quality automotive oil filter wrench around the tube to hold the flywheel.

This is a photo with the flywheel off.

it should also be noted never use a pneumatic impact wrench for installing the flywheel. a customer recently called me to purchase a new crank because he sheared off the end of the crank using one. ouch! quality torque wrench only! ;)

definetly use the fly wheel puller motion pro makes one its like 25 bucks i had to get one to do the timing chain on my 05 crf 450. i rebuilt the top end a couple months ago i was debating to do the the cam chain or not since i had my bike apart already, but it looked fine so i didnt and two rides later the cam chain tensioner failed and i ended up have to install a new one along with the chain. the oem tensionor comes with the tool if not you can make one if you have the honda shop manual it has the dimensions for making one or you have to by one from honda and the dealership i go to wanted like almost 90 bucks for that little tool

Small blade screw driver and a pair of vise grips replaces the OEM tool. So does just pulling the tensioner, but the screw driver and vise grips is the most used option.
