Just bought a 05 CRF450R. I was going through it yesterday getting it cleaned up at checking some clearances. I checked my valves with a feeler gauge while the lobes were facing straight back and got a good measurement on both at .006. However when I tried to check exhaust valve clearances I could not get the gauge between the valves at all.

Now my real question is; I could not get my lines to match up on the cam sprocket and at the bottom end as well. See pictures. They are so close to lining up but I am not sure if this is a big deal. Do I need to worry or what steps should I take to fix this if it is an issue?

they will line up when the timing is correct. resolve this before you check clearances or start your motor.

Thanks Ken. I will check out this site some more for tips on how to correctly line up the timing; then re-check my clearances.

So it's as easy as lining up the punch marks on the right side and making sure the piston is at TDC. Then unscrew the timing gear and rotate the gear until the mark on the gear matches the case mark and fasten it back on? All while holding TDC?
If so it seems almost to easy. Just want to make it right.

Im a complete Novice mate and I managed to do it ok. Its as you say. Get the dots to match on the right side then remove the gear and replace with the marks lining up. Just make sure your cam chain tensioner doesnt slip out of place while you have it loose.
