I currently have a CRF230F and its getting to small for me now so I want to go to the next step and that's the 250X. I really want to stick with Honda but I hear so many things about the 250X on maintenance and the big thing I hear is REBUILD.Anyway what is the normal maintenance needed. Do you have to rebuild it ? if so how many hours?? Please help me out!!

I don't know much about the specifics when it comes to any one brand. Each has strong and weak attributes. What I do know is that EVERY engine will eventually have to be rebuilt. Maintenance is key to keeping the cost of rebuilds down, and in keeping down time to a minimum. There are a lot of moving parts in these engines and frames, whether it be a Honda or any other brand, maintenance is key to engine longevity and smoothness.

My point is, you can buy any brand of bike and end up having to rebuild something. If you prefer Honda, then go for it! Get to know the bike, and maintenance will become easy. ESPECIALLY with the information on this site!

I have an 07 250X that was bought new in 08, I ride 2-3 times per month but have no hour meter so I can't give you an exact run time but this is how I maintain my X.

Air Filter- I clean the air filter after 2 rides maximum.

Oil Change- I assume it's around every 5 hours, I never let my oil change color before changing.

Chain- I clean and lube the chain every 2-3 rides

Linkage and Steering bearings- take apart and grease every 2 years.

These bikes do require more maintenance but in my opinion if you keep the oil changed and the air filter clean you can really add life to the top end, now, with that being said if you run it wide open at high rpm's you can shorten the life of the valves, most replace the oem titanium valves with stainless steel. I think it's a general consensus the 07 head is a little better than any year prior so if you are considering a used bike I would look at an 07 or newer. The downside to the X model is Honda has never produced a fuel injected version therefore you will need to re-jet the carburetor almost instantaneously. I have been extremely happy with my X and wouldn't consider another brand, I hope this isn't to much and in some way you find it helpful.

cheers for the advice !! could you please explain what they have done to the 07's and up models please, and the general maintenance is cleaning air filter, changing oil and clean oil filter?

like he said make sure you change your oil on a regular basis you would be surprised how far that goes with any engine. But to add on the only real major maintance you have to do besides oil and airfilter is valve adjustment but it really isn't that bad at all i had my 06 250x forever ran it from brand new until recently switching to my back up bike and i had no major issues with it and i ran that bike hard!

on the 250X the heads really did not change. it was the 250R heads that continued to be improved by Honda. the improvements were in porting primarily. for 250X owners that are looking for increased performance we recommend the '07 or the '08 250R head.

other than replacing worn pistons (required for any bike with hours) the valves will be something that at some point you'll have to address. this is typically around 75 hours. when this time comes replacing the stock titanium valves with Kibblewhite stainless steel valves will get you outstanding valve durability.

other than this, as mentioned, keep your oil clean and topped off and air filter clean and secure.

the 08 and up x have a different gas tanks then the 07. its more slim. and in the above post were it says " clean oil filter" dont clean it, just replace it. they are not made to be cleaned, unless you buy a 30$ reusable one. and my dad had a 250x for a year and never touched the engine.

there is no down side injection would make the x un rely able and i hope they don't do it easy to fix easy to mod
