    XR-50 runs...then not

    by kevpilot » Mon Dec 19, 2011 10:34 am

My '02 XR-50 starts, idles and warms up fine, runs in first gear with not too much throttle demand...... but when I add more throttle and shift to another gear, the bikes stutters and chugs as if not getting enough fuel.

We just completed an oil change, air filter cleaning, and carb soaking and cleaning to remove old gas and gunk. Everything mentioned is clean now.....so.......any thoughts as to causes?

I thought fuel petcock, but I just drained the entire fuel tank using the fuel line attached to that and the tank drained fine.

    Thanks

okay...pulled the carb off AGAIN! Took it apart. The float floats. Soaked everything in carb cleaner and blew out all the orifices I could find. Back on the bike tomorrow. In theory all should work besides a little idle adjustment......right??
Am I missing something in this simple little carb?

    Thanks

if the float is sticking or the level is too low this could explain your situation. so make sure it's set up correctly and working as it should. if it is not the carb then the next place to look is electrical.

I got the carb all cleaned and put back together. Before installing the carb I tried to removed the exhaust tip....and low and behold......it wouldn't budge! I carefully chiseled it off and it was a mess! Sanded and soaked the spark arrestor to get it cleaned and clear. Removed the exhaust pipe and tapped it on the garage floor to get as much rust and chunky crap as I could out of the pipe. Re-installed the pipe and while the tip was soaking I re-installed the carb and took the bike for a quick run. It ran great! Through all three gears and plenty of throttle.
Maybe the blocked up exhaust? Maybe I cleaned the crap out of the carb? Maybe both?
