2006 CRF 250r stock piston compression?

    by Nstyle » Sun Dec 04, 2011 5:26 pm

I just did a compression test on my 06 CRF 250R and it read at 60 psi on the dot...I don't have the manual yet so is that a good compression?

I'm not 100% sure on this, but a regular compression test won't tell you much on your bike because of the auto decompressor. It won't be an accurate reading. If you are looking to diagnose a problem you need to perform a leak down test. I'm pretty sure the Clymer tells you how to do the test. I don't have my manual handy so I can't say for sure.

Okay thanx I was going to order the clymer this Monday but when I was doing the test I also noticed some engine oil on the spark plug but no smoke when running the bike...could this be bad rings?

Definitely order the manual you can get it from this site! As for the oil on the plug I can't answer your question as to whether it bad rings or not. One of the more experienced wrenches in here will be able to answer it for you sooner or later though!

Is there something wrong with the bike? Or are you just do maintenance? Was the plug full of carbon, or actually oily?

check your thread on this question. that oil is coming from the valve cover spark plug seal...it is either damaged or installed incorrectly.

definitely replace it if it's damaged or warn. if not and it's just not installed correctly fix that and you'll be set.

Not a stupid question, I always ask questions like that when I'm unfamiliar with what I'm working on. I never worked on a 4 stroke before I bought my CRF 250r. This site and the clymer has been an amazing help. Better safe than sorry!

Yes, pull the cover and look under it, there should be a black rubber seal where the plug goes through. If its not there it might have stuck on the spark plug tower on the head (where the spark plug goes through). When I pulled my head it stayed on the valve cover though.

Hope you've ordered the manual by now! Torque bolts back down to spec when replacing the valve cover.

dirtae brings up a good point...when torquing the valve cover bolts make sure not to over torque them. they are known to snap or strip.
