Service manual states "remove carbon deposits from piston head". What is the best (garage tools only) way to accomplish this? Manual states not to use wire brush, what's the best tool? Thanks in advance to all the smart folks.

Staffy is right, you typically just replace the piston. If you really want to clean it, soak it in contact cleaner.

For my money, no point in tearing it down that far just to put the old on back in unless you blew a head gasket on a fresh rebuild or something.
