Pull the big plug off on the clutch side of the engine. If you look in the hole, you'll see a dot on the gear inside the case and an arrow on the cover where you removed the cap. Line those to up together. On the camshaft gear, there are 2 slash marks on the gear that need to be ligned up with the sealing surface of the vavle cover. The intake valve lobes on the camshaft should be facing somewhat towards the carb, so pretty much back and up. All of these marks need to ligned up at the same time. When you have them all ligned up together, you can stick your finger in the timing chain tensioner hole and apply pressure to the timing chain guide to get a better idea as to where you're at. After you're confident that you have it timed correctly and have the tensioner back in, rotate the engine over a few times to make sure that everything is right where it needs to be. If it's off, you can tell easily because it's not going to be close. This is a real simple thing to do, but if you're off by a couple of teeth, it can do some serious damage if you try to kick it over.
