    clutch problem

    by crfmorrison » Tue Oct 11, 2011 1:51 pm

I just bought a used 05 crf250r and im having clutch problems. The problem is when I start the bike and pull in the clutch and put it in gear it starts rolling forward or dies. When the bike isnt started I have the same problem the bike wont roll if its in gear with the clutch all of the way pulled in. I bought a new cable and adjusted it all the way out and still doesn't work. I also pulled the clutch apart.and the basket seems fine and to my knowledge the plates look ok. Can anyone please help?

Yes it has a small amount of free play. The clutch kind of works but its like it wont fully engage, its still barely in gear if u know what I mean.

when you had the clutch apart did you inspect the inner hub and pressure plate? also, did you measure the plates for being in spec?

you'd use a caliper to measure them. also measure the springs.

    specs:

    drive plates - 2.92-3.08mm
    drive plate warp - 0.10mm
    spring free length - 38.0mm

check for any notches in the basket or inner hub. also verify the pressure plate is not worn, warped or damaged. check everything from the lever to the clutch for any damage or wear.

Alright so I just got done pulling the clutch apart again. All the springs are between 38.14 mm to 38.34mm. The total plate pack is between 33.2mm to 33.4 mm. There's only 3 plates that are around 2.92mm and the rest are less on average 2.86mm.

the 2.86mm plates are at the service limit and should be replaced. it may not be the only issue but they are at the service limit. rather than replace one at at time replace all of them and the springs at the same time. both the Honda kit and the Hinson kit we offer are outstanding.
