Pull the shift lever off then use a hook tool to hook the seal and pull it out. Real easy job.

Yeah...it looks difficult but its really not. The seal is reinforced with then metal and it can be pulled out in one piece. Just be careful not to scratch the walls or the gear shifter shaft.

Thanks for the info. Do I hook the inner diamter of the seal or the outer diamter? What is a good way to push it back in? Any pitfalls to watch out for?

Grab it from the inside. Installing it just use a deep well socket and use one as close to the outside diameter of the seal that you can. If you happpen to scratch the housing when your pulling it out, just use some red loctite on the outside of the seal before you install it. I use the red stuff on all the seals before I install them.

digging up bones.....
anyone help me with finding the part number needed for this o-ring/seal? I just picked up a bike with oil all over the gear shifter, not sure if its behind the sprocket or not...but wanted to see what part is needed if the bad seal is coming from the actual gear shifter (2003)
