How do you ride deep tire ruts? Every time, my front wheel hits the side and over I go ...

Of course I try to avoid them, but we had a wet early summer here in NH and there are plenty of dep ruts on the trails/class VI roads around here.

thanks - happy trails

The absolute best way to ride ruts is to not ride them.

As I do agree with Mr. Smith, I have found that keeping your speed up (consistent) not necessarily "fast", will help. Sometimes, you just can't avoid going over...happens to the best!

When I was a kid I got caught in a huge rut once out at Charlies place (Near Ridgecrest CA) and ended up with my nogen between the fender and the spinning rear tire of my bike. (Dont ask) After my dad pulled me outa the mess and I asked him how could I have riden through that rut better...That was his reply.

dont look down at the rut, look forward where you want the bike to go instead of staring down at your front tire..

I hated ruts and always fell even in the short ones. This is what I learned and last week I road a 200 yd deep rut up a steep hill with no problems.
There are three things to remember.
1. Don't look down. You need to look at a minimum 30 feet ahead.
2. If you can stand up, your body knows what to do if you can keep your mind straight.
3. Don't look down.
If by chance you forget these three there is another trick. DON'T LOOK DOWN.
Give that a shot and you will be amazed.

Never look at the rut!( i mean dont ignore the huge boulder and root sticking up before the rut but just dont look at the rut) It is the human way to go exactly where you look. So many times when im in that gray area when im about to crash, I usually see that stump or tree or rock and say " aw man i dont want to hit that" and thats always exactly where i land. Its cus I looked, since then i just look ahead.

The same will happen to u if you see that rut. Easy on the throttle when your trying to go around it, because many times if you spin, u go into the rut. If by chance you get into that rut, either try to hop the bike out if going slow, or keep going using your body to guide the bike, YOU WILL NOT OUTSTEER THE RUT!

I used to have a real bad habit of trying to outsteer ruts. A lot of ridin sideways and crashes.

Try to keep the rpm's low so you have a "wheelie on tap" IE, you can wheelie out if you need to. Also, if it is a deep on like around here, where there are a lot of peg scraper spots, keep up a lot of momentum. It's a lot harder to crash if you have more momentum, but when you do crash, it hurts a hell of a lot worse. ;)

to ride a rut= look at the end if you can, at least way up, and a trick- slightly ride the front brake, it'll keep the front tire tracking in the direction of the rut ;)
