    not using the clutch ?

    by revs » Wed Apr 16, 2008 5:10 am

i've heard and read a little about changing gear up and down with out using the clutch and supposedly it doesn't do any damage to the gearbox as long as you have the revs at the correct range etc - has anyone any input on this ?

    thanks Revs

i never use the clutch going down gears
when going up i will sometimes use it and sometimes i wont just depends if i need to.
eg. 3/4 throttle and backing off to around 1/2 i just slip it up a gear

full throttle flat change i just touch the clutch sometimes to take the load off the gears and change up

Whats a clutch?  Only time I use it is start , stop, and corners other wise I don't know what it is. I've done it with both my Cr250 and my 450 and have had no adverse effects as of yet. Knock on wood! knock knock.

the race bike gears are so close that it does not hurt them to bang in

    Downshiting is fine.

If you unload the gears on the upshift but letting off the throttle a bit you are fine.

If i may, i just had a friend bring me an 09 RMZ transmission to look at. he told me it was popping out of gear and i found the culprit to be one of the thrust washers (if i remember correctly it was between second and third). it had become conical (bent) creating a larger gap between the gears not allowing them to mesh completely thus poping out of gear under load like jump landings whoops etc... anyway i was watching him ride the other day and boy does he STOMP the gears (on the gas switching every time) so id think that the gears can take the punishment but the shift dogs can get bent from this kind of behavior let alone a little thrust washer (lucky him).
I myself only use the clutch for starts and feeding the power through corners and thats it HOWEVER! when i do switch gear i cut the throttle to relieve load in the tranny. haven't had a problem yet and trans is still original.
